Ok, so a coupe of stories here, sadly and quite scarily my 330d cayught fire on suday and was wrecked, I was upset but my kids were in the car and as long as everyone is ok, then it doesn't really matter. I dont know why, we were stationary started it up and smoke came through the heater, within 5 minutes it was gone.

so anyway the insurance has collected, annoyingly the V5 and all the docs were in it, i'd like to keep to private plate, how the hell do I go about getting back?

Legally the car is still yours until you accept an offer from the insurance company I believe so I'd call them and ask. I'm sure they hav been asked before.

I'd probably write a letter to BMW asking if they could tell you what happened.

Very strange! It wasn't a runaway turbo then?

I bet that was pretty scary, and I'm glad that everyone is okay, but why did you keep the v5and all documents in the car? Madness!

Apply for a new v5 and then put the plate on retention as soon as it comes back. DO NOT go through the dvla's written of car transfer process- believe me I learnt this the hard way and lost a nice 3x3 this way.

I know, when I had the plate transferred at the office I left them in the glovebox, then completely forgot about them, I know this is a stupid place to leave them just got distracted.

DPF fires have happened a few times, it is likely to be related to that.

Has this put you off BMWs or will you buy same again? Surely it can't happen again?!

This can't be common, can it?
