Running your snotter- what's it cost this month? NOV 2012
Discussion
I run a snotter on the basis that its cheaper than paying £xxx a month on a lease plan for a new car..
this month, the cost is less than a dacia sandero 1.2 16v on lease (if you assume it does the 47.9mpg quoted)- evidence http://www.carleasing4u.co.uk/car-leasing-deal-dac...
the sandero lease plus fuel is £360 (using my average cost per gallon of £6.13)..
I'm wondering how it compares to the PH snotters of others, So I've tracked the costs for this month (exc Tax/Insurance)- the results are below
this is the offender, in all its 2.8m52 manual glory (1x silver wheel FTW!).

So far from 25th Oct to 25th Nov, it has done the following:
1902 miles
using 54.79 Gallons (petrol only- New Vapourisor for the LPG was fitted 2nd Dec)
34.71mpg average
best of 37.56mpg on petrol
worst of 30.47mpg on petrol
Total Cost £336 all on petrol (£6.13/gallon, £1.349/litre average)
Per mile £0.176
Now the Vapourisor is fitted, I'm hoping for a drop in fuel costs (per mile)- at the moment This is the only legal, working car we have, so I expect the daily mileage will creep up as have to drop off/collect my burd from work.
Maintainence wise, I fitted the vapourisor I'd bought and that was it.
May need a service next month.
So, what's yours cost this month?

I've had this £281 snotter for nearly 3 years now.
Last month I put 1500 miles on it and all its cost is petrol at 38 mpg.
I've never had to put a drop of oil in it yet, but I decided to change the plugs which cost me £3.45 for 4 on eBay last month only to take the old ones out and find them as good as new.

IMHO you should include tax, as new cars are often in the £20-£120 band pa, whereas decent engined older cars are £200 odd..
adding in the £20.17 for 1/6th of the 121 I paid for tax this month takes it to £356.17, still £3.83 cheaper than the Sandero
But I keep tax out it for ease of calculation, as per the first post-so the folks with the 2002 on barges cant moan about paying eleventybillion for tax.

I used fairy liquid in some water out the kettle plus a towel, it really wasn't identifiable as "green" anymoreuncinquesei said:
£3.45 for plugs!?!?! The Alfa only needs them 10 yrs/ 60k but there are 8 and the total cost is over 80 quid....
Yes I got 4 New old stock Lucas plugs on eBay for £3.45, but the NGK plugs that came out were still as good as new, that will teach me for being extravagant lol.The old audi has been the best car I've owned it was also an eBay find with 51000 on the clock when I bought it.
Doing it monthly is a bit unfair, even the most hopeless old snotter can keep going for 4 weeks.
Mine uses an average of £190 for fuel every month, that’s for 1600 miles which is 12p a mile. Do we include tax and insurance too? That bumps it up to 15p a mile so even with maintenance, tyres, MoT and a new wire for my MP3 player it’s less than 17p a mile. Depreciation per year is negligible, which is nice.

ts and giggles
as for tax/insurance, I'd rather leave them out, as per first post..
agreed re depreciation- one of the advantages of an older car, its worth almost the same in scrap as it was to buy
2k for me this month (ouch) - new radiator and gearbox rebuild. I took a chance on the gearbox being ok after the radiator failure took the ATF cooler with it. Gearbox lasted 100 miles after the rad was fixed. ho hum
2001 Lexus LS with 160k - does it class as a snotter?
For the past 3.5 years and 60k miles its cost me a set of tyres, brake pads a light bulb and a La Bamba sensor,
why include fuel/tax? if you had a brand new car you'd still have to pay for those, surely the comparison is between 'finance/depreciation costs' and 'repair costs'.

Hi,
Well my total expense on my 1.6 Focus estate is as follows:
Fuel = £35
Repairs = £9 for replacement alternator belt.
This is my first snotter, but i find it so satisfying to not worry about how clean it is and how much it's depreciated etc.
I think i'll want a snotter within the fleet from here on in!
