I was behind a nice, new(ish) looking Merc E class earlier and the placement of the screws attaching the numberplate caught my eye. There were 4 screws used without coloured caps and I thought it looked odd... maybe a bit 'cheap' looking?

I appreciate that some people don't care, I'm a but fussy like that wink and certainly would be on a brand new car. My cars either have coloured screw caps or stuck on with velcro.

Finally, aren't there specific placement holes pre-drilled in the car? Wouldn't odd placement potentially lead to premature resting?

I know! I'm a fussy bugger!

So, do you care? How bad is your OCD with numberplates?

I feel exactly the same. Normally I notice it on Vauxhalls but also seen it on Mercs too.

There's a reason for this. Mercedes from dealers come with a screwless mounting bracket, and that's screwed into the bodywork with four screws (which you can't see once the plate is in).

Trouble is, sometimes people remove the whole lot when swapping plates, leaving them with four screw holes. Furthermore, the original screws that secure the holders are too big for caps, so they end up capless.

And yes, I had exactly this on mine. Went and got the original dealer holders for it in the end as it annoyed me.

I'll see if I can find a pic.

People who use screw-caps to alternate the lettering on their plates should fk right off.

This is the sort of thing.

If the car has its plates changed, especially by a non Merc dealer, they often ditch the surround and put their own plates on, so you have the original bolts for the holders screwed through plates, and they're too big for caps.

As I say, my car came like it so I went to my local dealer and got them to fit their dealer plates with the proper holders.

Hate it when they're not right! Got a matching dealer tax disc holder at the same time... (Did someone mention OCD? biggrin )

See, I also object to dealer advertising on my car so that MB surround would also annoy me. I genuinely think that it would really bother me if I picked up a new car and it had four silver screw heads visible.curse

Incidentally, this Merc had a short private plate and the plate width had been reduced so maybe this is why it didn't have the proper mount

I'd far rather have the dealer name than four uncapped screws poking out of the plates...

Impact tape. Ask a carpet fitter. I've always stuck my plates directly to the vehicle. With private plates it also allows transfers of plates between vehicles without ordering a new plate because the holes are in the wrong place. OCD heaven.

First job on a previous supercharged C class with four revolting screw heads.

True, I'll give you that. But neither appeals smile

Slightly O/T, but WTF are all the cut-outs in the back of those plate holders for?? I've also seen the same on other manufacturer holders. Do they use them to make other parts of the car or something :/

I'm guessing it's just a cost cutting measure. Why mass produce thousands of these when you can remove pretty much half the plastic while it remains just as rigid... at least that's my theory.

Well that was my initial thought. But look at all of those squares, rectangles and circles all of specific sizes and shapes. If they wanted to cut costs surely they could just take a big chunk out of each corner? It just looks like those cut-outs are used somewhere else...?

They've got to be alternative mounting options surely? One plate holder fits all cars.

Perfect example of one in action.
