Apologies for another thread on the subject but I am watching a car on fleabay which is a fair price and a classified ad, not an auction.

I have contacted the vendor by e-mail to ask a couple of questions and they have responded promptly and also advised that they are in Spain at present and a shipper has the car and will deliver it once sold.

Everything else seems to be above board but I thought I would check with you guys who have more knowledge and experience of the scammers' art. So what is the consensus? What should I be wary of? All advice gratefully received. smile

Any tortuous scheme involving people travelling abroad, third party shipping agents, relatives or Nigerian uncles is highly suspect.

If you can't view the car and take possession immediately after you pay the cash then it's a scam or potentially more trouble than it's worth.

Agree with above, no point in taking this chance, there's plenty of used cars around.
Best way is see the car, (& check it etc etc) then, when decided, hand over the money at the same time as receiving the keys. And take the car away straight away.

This applies as much to a dealer purchase as a private one. Dealers can go bust overnight.

Usually a variation on the fake escrow scam.

I really thought everyone was aware of this type of story - owner abroad, arrange for shipping etc. It appears not and that's a worrying thing. There must be many poor people falling for this stuff.

Without wanting to sound rude OP, so please forgive me in advance but surely your common sense must have made you think it's a scam? I mean who has their cars held with a shipping company, residing in another country and using a rubbishy site (for buying a car) like ebay other than someone who is up to no good?

Any car advert or potential sale that comes with a little story is always a scam. Always, always a scam.

It's terrifying to think that so many people actually fall for these sort of scams. There must be loads of gullible fools out there otherwise there would not be so many of these adverts around.

Yes, it did, hence this thread!

To be honest, I haven't bought a car from a private seller for years but I'm looking for a snotter for winter / shed / tip duties and this one fit the bill - until the mention of the owner being abroad etc so thought I would get the benefit of the knowledge of fellow PHers. Glad I did.

Thank you all for your responses - I'll give this one a miss and be careful in future thumbup

How many of these threads actually end up with the advert being genuine? Not very many I reckon.

I'd love to know who many people still get scammed by this type of thing, i'd bet its a worryingly large number.

Scam. I enquired about a discovery on an ad site recently. Read up well, and very well priced.
I got back a cock and bull e mail about shipping, it being his brothers car currently stuck in Spain as he was to ill to travel etc etc.
Bottom line was for me to pay pal the money then it would be shipped over. Sad part is, some people actually fall for it.
