I just found one of these..

I remember getting them free with AA membership etc.. And never being that good. I suppose the maps themselves are getting rarer these days with sat navs in most vehicles these days.
So what else do you see less of these days or inventions that never really took off?

in no particular order:

- personal CD player to cassette adapter (the auxiliary cable of the early 90s)

- black box with buttons that make police car type noises / key fobs that beep when you whistle (80s stocking fillers)

- seat cover sets to hide drab vinyl interiors (which tend to be better now, and side airbags now make impractical)

- static electricity things hanging off the rear bumper (god knows who dreamt them up)

- and for me what is the biggest shame: lack of bolt on spot lights (ignoring pathetic bmw-mini attempted nostalgia)

Original, gold chain, stick a pin in the back, Feu Orange. My dad used to have them in his cars when I was but a nipper. Memories of that smell in a Vauxhall Viva make me all misty eyed. Of course the Viva had more holes in it than the air freshener when you threw it away.

What about Stop Locks? Very rare to see one fitted to a steering wheel these days.

What were these actually meant to do? Something with car sick iirc.

I seem to have seen a few about recently too, more so than in recent years. Weirdos.

They keep the car earthed so when you get out and touch the door you don't get a shock.

Wooden beaded car seat covers

"Waving hands", stuck on with a rubber suction cup

Those door edge protectors which look like little hands / fingers

Fake mobile phone antennas

Headlight covers that made a standard rectangular headlight look like twin round ones

That eight track tape will be about as popular as Jimmy Saviles autobiography!

proper gauges,

oil pressure, oil temp, voltage, coolant temp, turbo boost

in the olden days even a Nova SR dash looked like a WW2 bomber with all the needles.

And to stop the petrol filler nozzle sparking in contact with your statically charged car and igniting the petrol vapour, causing a fire / explosion. Not sure how much of a risk this really is with cars, but it's enough of a risk with planes that they are degaussed on landing before fuelling.
