I need to buy a 4x4 to use for 6 months abroad.

Only diesel available and vast majority of vehicles there are some form of Land Rover derivative

Have approx £3000 to spend.

Solid examples at this price or a wallet raper of epic proportions?

Having bought a £4000 td5 a couple of years ago I would say avoid. Most unreliable car I have ever had.

My terrano ticks all your boxes and you can have some change back. My bro has has an 03 disco. It's low miles one owner etc etc, its been so much trouble he's bought something else now. It's been off the road so much that he can't trust it anymore. When its back from its latest problem (leaking windscreen seal, oil leak, air bag suspension fault) its going.

My TD5 was £6k 18 months ago and has been pretty much bulletproof so far. Only faults have been heater final stage resistor (£100) and a battery drain traced down to the air suspension pump running from time to time despite being changed to springs. Overall very happy.

They're fine, rear suspension can leak which can be expensive.

They seem to be pretty good, however Landrovers are costly when things do go wrong.

Well soon your steering box will develop a leak and your injector harness will need replaced due to a leaky seal. After that your ace pipes will start leaking and if you are very unlucky your rear diff give up. Your sunroof already leaks and there is rust around the rear door hinge.

Ps. That is just my experience and I hope you don't have these problems.

Sunroof does leak a bit hehe

Injector harness is ok, no sign of oil heading down to the ECU so far. Steering box was replace by previous owner smile
