2CV.

My old one is on it's 3rd chassis now, and we think that one of the doors might still be off the original car.

And they aren't cheap.

Original Mini? Fantastic car, but now definitely none of the above.

I think the 2CV and Mini come under cheap so can't be included in this thread.

They're not really cheap any more. I understand the point. My Mini, even back in the 80s, was a rolling failure cycle but in fairness, all the parts were very cheap.

What about some of these old Fords that seem to be going for silly prices these days?

I wouldn't have thought, for example, an old mk2 Escort would be terribly fast, cheap, or reliable?

Or have I just opened up a can of worms? hehe

Something like a Renault Avantime. Cheap-ish to buy, admittedly, but very expensive to run, appalling to drive other than in a straight line, as thirsty as a darts player, and 100% guaranteed to have electrical/gearbox/engine problems.

I think this ticks at least two boxes, not sure on the reliability bit though....

Your statement shouldn't open a can of worms but no doubt it has! Remember my Dad buying a mint Riviera Blue Mk2 Rs2000 with a full built 2.1 in it with a full leather fishnets on the inside too. He gave £2k for it and thought that was daft money! This was nearly 10 years ago but still. However now the face that you're looking a £4k for a semi - tidy 4 door Escort Pop is ridiculous, if you have a two door shell it doesn't matter what condition it's in, it's still worth around £4k of anyone's money.

I like EVERYTHING about RWD escorts, the noise a tuned pinto makes, the way they look, even how they drive once they've been 'sorted' but nowadays they have 0 appeal to me because they're daft money.

The same can't be said for 3 door Sierra Cossies though rolleyes

Oh don't get me wrong, I do like old Fords, but I did think they might be appropriate for this thread!

I know someone who paid £3k+ for a 1.3 automatic mk2 Escort saloon. Supposedly the coupes, like you say, are considerably more expensive.

Interesting that you say they were at daft money 10 years ago, it will be interesting to see whether they stay at these prices or not, and what cars from today end up like that!

I think the French probably have this thread sewn up hehe

Especially stuff like the C4 VTS, which wasn't fast, wasn't particularly cheap and was unreliable.

Or Renaults which are great at going fast, but rubbish at anything else.

I am a massive Ford fan but most of the 'good' stuff (quick) is going for silly money these days.

Exactly, it seems ridiculous but then you've gotta think £3k on your initial cost, throw a couple of £££'s at it turning it into an old school Harris Performance Engines street rod wannabe and some fella will give you £7k for it even if it's a four door. Claim your Pinto is a 2.1 and put a set of 45 DCOE's on it and everyone will proceed to dry hump it.

Yeah my Dad bought it with 'engine trouble' which turned out to be a bad attempt at wiring up the electronic ignition, but he soon fixed that, had a laugh in it for a month and sold it for £4k, it last changed hands for £13k and that was around 3 or 4 years ago!

I can think of delorean DMC for a start...
Provided they are actually driven rather than left to rot, a DeLorean DMC-12 is very reliable (no breakdowns yet in two years of ownership), and if you don't mind a fixer upper, they can be had for relatively little money.

"rubbish at going fast" you've got me there wink they don't have a blistering amount of BHP, but they are more than quick enough to keep pace with regular traffic.
