Selling a car but want to keep the cherish plate?
Discussion
Have just agreed the sale of my car to a thoroughly decent chap, he'd like to collect the car next weekend which is fine however I'd like to keep the private plate and put it on retention.
What's the quickest way to do this so that the cherish plate is put on retention and the original number plate is assigned to the car again?
Thanks,
Rich

That's all well and good but you won't have a V5 when the buyer comes for the car. You need to check in advance that he's happy to part with cash without seeing a V5.
Right, I know a V5 isn't proof of ownership but it does give a lot of reassurance.
At the very least, your buyer is likely to want a clear written contract for sale of the car. would be a good idea to have that ready when you talk to him and can email it straight over. The contract should identify the car by its make, model, colour and VIN.

Exactly, the chap quite rightly would like a V5. Is there anyway to expedite the process so that the plate is on retention and a new V5 is issued within a week? Right, I know a V5 isn't proof of ownership but it does give a lot of reassurance.

DVLA website and their timescales would indicate not.
The alternative is that the car is sold to him with the current plate and he returns it in due course, he's kindly offered a small deposit to mitigate my risk. I have to emphasise he comes across as a very decent guy.
If you hand the car over before getting the v5 back and buyer applies for a v5 you're likely to lose the plate
You can try speaking to your local dvla office (when you call you speak to Swansea) about how much paperwork they can do in one hit. If they can do all the retention side and issue replacement tax disc with old reg with v5 to follow to new owner then you might be ok, but I'm not sure they'll entertain doing this any more
You are always advised to remove a private plate well in advance of planning to sell as it can take weeks for the v5 to come back

Thanks with the benefit of hindsight I would have. Just trying to figure out the quickest/smartest way given the time constraints. No, there isn't. Which is why they advise retaining a number you want to keep before offering a vehicle for sale as title to retain the number passes with the change of registered keeper. 10 working days is the time they quote for a Cherished Transfer or Retention application. It *may* be quicker than this, but there's no way they can or will guarantee that. DVLA website and their timescales would indicate not.
An option remaining is for him to trust you that you will fill out and backdate the change of registered keeper details once you have the new V5C on a normal age-related plate and he'll receive a V5C in hi sname on the age-related plate in due course.
The invoice/document you both draw up that confirms the date of change and any price paid and other conditions constitutes proof of ownership in a legal sense, the V5C does not.
You should fill in the V317 as if he is the registered keeper and also complete the V5 showing him as the new keeper. Be sure to put your details as the Grantee on the V317. You make out a cheque to DVLA.
One of you needs to send this lot off to DVLA and you'll have to agree that between you, or drive to a post box together.
There's always a small element of risk, but you should be fine if you are both decent.

No. AFAIK all the V5s come direct from Swansea - generally in 2 to 3 weeks. I imagine December is a quiet month for DVLA so should put you at the shorter end of that timescale. But then it's Christmas hols....Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
