Hi all,
it's time for me to choose a new company car, buy the existing one, or go off the scheme and take cash instead.

I've been given a quote to buy the existing company car, and am totally shocked (in a good way) at the price it's being offered for, so would like to understand if I'm just overestimating the worth of the car.

Can someone price this up please, as if it was a private or trade sale?

Thanks. It looks like I am overestimating what the car is worth. Is that from Glass's or similar?

It cost the company (at list, if they paid that) £38K to £39K with the options on there, so that's about £23K lost in 20 months in depreciation.

Just as well I wasn't paying that personally...

Thanks for that. I did actually look but there's nothing in the classifieds with remotely the same sort of spec as the car I mention.

Parkers for a px suggest 14.5k, the options will help it and BMW do need certain options to retain value but never get much back for them.

What someone will pay for it however is another matter.

Their system, their rules. Buy any car you like from any mainstream manufacturer (certain exclusions: Lotus, Caterham are the only ones I can think of). Spec it however you like (want cloth and yet huge alloys? no problem...). Take it for 2,3, or 4 years. Rinse and repeat.

At list, yes. All aboard the depreciation train, woo woo!

(Bear in mind, I paid nothing like £23K for the use of the car in that time..)

I wonder how the lease companies manage to give the deals they do (i assume buying hundreds of cars at discount) as that car over 24 months on a lease deal would probably total about 10k in payments.

There's got to be a lot of discount involved, I recon. The numbers simply don't stack up any other way.

By my reconing, the car would have to have been sold for under £30K in the first place against a (nearly) £39K list price for the leasing company not to be making a loss.

Of course, they might be making a loss, but that would be really stupid.

What a load of old flannel, it has Leather seats and a screen in the dash, the rest of it is standard on most cars anyway, did someone really pay 38 grand for a 320D with a couple of options ?

From the bits above, the main ones are ZP3 (professional nav), ZV3 (Xenon going-round-corners-headlights), and the seats (leather, electric, lumbar, sports function, heated etc).

IIRC the basic speakers on the 3er are rubbish (the harman kardon ones aren't great either, just better). Comfort access is a keyless go system (which is something I wouldn't like to be without having got used to it - same goes for auto dimming mirrors all round).

The rest are things that should be standard (eg. cruise control, which is standard on the new 3er, or the folding rear seats, which aren't) or things I don't use much but which didn't cost much either (eg. extended storage).

It's a company car so the question "did someone really buy this?" would have to be answere with "no" - a company bought it and leased it to the company I work for. The question is whether I buy it or move on to another company car.

On a related note, what would you consider to be a decent specification for that sort of BMW?

^ For future reference, you can always use an on-line valuation 'guide' such as Glass that costs a few £s but gives you a range of figures. As one of the other responders said, you need to cut through the codes to the main items as it would have 'tick box' to reflect the spec.

My point was that most of it is like one of those ads that lists what every car has as standard, "Split fold rear seats", how exciting, then the rest of it is a screen in the dash and several methods of jazzing up the seats, the germans really like to make a feature out of stuff you get on pretty much every other car as standard.

Nothing special about BMW. Pretty much every manufacturer will use a similar template.

So: I wanted a price/valuation for the car as it is today.

Given that the list of options is exactly that - a list of optional extras (everything on the list costs money, save the badge removal and deletion of the smokers pack), I have basically no idea why you'd say that the list is a "load of flannel".

Do I list things like ABS, DSC, Alloy wheels? No: they are standard on this model.

Your point seems to be that BMW ought to fit this car with more things as standard.

That doesn't make the list above a load of flannel at all - you have to know what's fitted to the car in order to give it a valuation, which is after all the point of the thread.

Split folding rear seats are an option on this car. I suppose it matters quite a bit, to someone who wants the option of putting the back seats down.

I believe this is an option on most BM's and Audi Saloons, just a joke really they can still get away with it on 30k+ cars!
