Monaro / Mustang / Maser 4200 / DB7 / 996
Discussion
These are those I'm currently obsessing over...
Having finally convinced the missus to get a do-it-all (read dull) daily driver, I'm thinking of 'toy' once her old Aygo and my old 535d are sold... Must be at least a 2+2, budget £10-20k (the less the better), and would like a decentish fun steer that feels a bit 'special'. Weekend use only.
Monaro. +ve Loud, brash, V8, cheap. -ve erm... badge?
Mustang. As Monaro, extra -ve of LHD
4200. +ve classy italian minor exotica, V8. +ve running costs?
DB7. +ve It's an Aston, -ve A bit old fashioned, slow? (know nothing about them)
996 (pos Turbo). +ve Reliable?, quick, handling prowess. -ve Predictable, Turbo would be topping the budget.
What have I missed? Opinions?

Don't worry about that blacktaxi guy, I haven't seen a worthwhile post from him yet.
The Monaro is possibly the best out of your choices, purely because it'll be the most reliable and easiest to live with day-to-day. The Mustang is LHD and surprisingly wide, causing all kinds of issues in car parks, the Mas is ruinous to run and not as fun as its reputation says, the DB7 is fantastic but getting on a bit now, and 996s are a lucky dip for £15k.
My suggestion? If you're hellbent on your selections, go for the Monaro. It's reliable, practical, and servicing intervals are pretty decent. It can cope with abuse as well seeing as it was designed for the Aussies and their outback desert thing.
Personally, I'd also look at an E46 M3, an Impreza STi, an E39 M5 or even a real toy like an R33 Skyline or Lotus Elise/Vauxhall VX220 Turbo.

I just had a quick look through his profile, and I'm not even that OCD, but oh dear god.OP, I'd go for the DB7, but at that price, looks like it would be a pretty shonky one.
Depends if you want a rough DB7 or a tidier something else.
Find a supercharged Monaro for well within budget, fill it up and laugh out loud everytime you drive it. Gets as much attention as anything else on the list, you wont look like a tool at the fuel pumps like you would in a porker (I know ive had both) and people come and ask what it is everytime you are filling up with fuel.
Id be half tempted by the DB7, but knowing 2 people who have had them, id want 10k minimum sat in the 'maintenance' bank account just incase.

4200 has good rep for reliability. It's predecessor the 3200 less so (been there got the t-shirt) but even those can be ok if you get a good one.
My choice would be a db7v12 though.
Or go for a Bentley Turbo R.
Why buy a vauxhall? It's just boring incomparison to the others and the interior won't feel special compared to the others (except the 996)
20kish and a bit more can get you into a 996 turbo though which is a lot of motor for the money...

Er because its not a Vauxhall? Its a holden with a corvette engine in it, back to basics RWD with a diff on the arse end, same old school manual box that the DB7 vantage used and is great fun to drive, plus you can drive the knackers off them without worrying about every squeek or rattle costing 5grand to fix.
i love the Monaro. As previously mentioned, it offers a lovely V8, RWD and a great deal of performance for the running costs. It would be a tough decision for me between the Monaro and the 996 Turbo, but I tend to prefer to not stretch my budget and have money left over for fixing things should I need to.
