Anyone clued up on there things? After a cheap barge, are these from the time when mercs where built like tanks? I have been looking at the 250 diesel models people claim high 30's mpg seem pretty good? are they potential money pits or are they easy to fix?

I love them.. However they are old! They are getting tired, so I would look closely at the MOT advisory and inspect the condition carefully.

Apparently if you get the old diesel engine version you can run it on pure veggie oil.

W124s are very much from the "hewn from granite" period, however they are old cars now and many will require age related consumambles to be replaced. They do have a good reputation for running on and on however, and most parts are fairly easy to come by if needed.

They are solid but now old, I have loved mine dearly but also thrown a lot of money at it, all worth it as far as I'm concerned because its such a comfy wafty place to be and a future classic. The gearbox that's just died is testing me though!!! Get over to the Merc forum here as there is lots of very helpful and knowledgable folk there.....

E300 Diesel Estates do 33 mpg all the time. E250 saloon might be a tad less thirsty - 34 mpg?

Great things, unbreakable and nice to ride in. Wonderfully slow. Throttle pedal has two positions - on and off.

All the diesels I've bought in the last three years have needed new engine mounts so budget for those (£65 x 2). New ARB bushes (£5 x 4) make them nicer to drive

Run them on veg if you like - they don't care. If it's vaguely combustible it'll do

In a nutshell

- Very, very slow from a standstill.
- Stolen very often for export, especially in London (it got to the point where the police sent letters to the owners!).
- Old so a lot of abused sheds which have been run on god knows what crap
- Don't expect modern diesel economy

+ MEGA reliable and genuinely rack up a million miles
+ They make a lovely noise
+ Very easy to fix
+ Comfy
+ Panzer build

I think you have to take the "OMG Bullet proof build" nonsense with a large pinch of salt these days. The youngest of these cars is close to 20 year old and a lot of them have been owned by people who believed they were indestructible, particularly the tightwads who usually own Dizzlers, so be warned... wink

Yes, a good one will last better than a lot of other cars, but a bad one will ruin you, and whatever you get don't expect to keep it running on a shoestring.
I would though...

Ah recognise that street. Simple things but most have been to the moon and back, take the odometer reading with a pinch of salt!
