I have a MK2 Golf and the shell is superb the only thing is it keeps not starting in the mornings sometimes! I've just had a brand new alternator put on it and a new battery fitted .. I want to sell it what's the best way to go about it?
I've been to the garage and because I'm a girl they wont tell me a straight answer as my mechanic doesn't like Volkswagens full stop

Not really sure what you are asking exactly.I've been to the garage and because I'm a girl they wont tell me a straight answer as my mechanic doesn't like Volkswagens full stop
But if you want to sell place an ad here: http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/home/used-cars
ebay and autotrader would be other options, or even just a printed sign in the vehicle.
If you want to fix it and then sell it/keep it try a better garage that'll treat you with more respect than your current one is.

When my Mk2 was failing to start it turned out to be the ignition module. Which was an easy swap as it is visible when opening the bonnet and only held in with 2 screws.
The beauty of owning a Mk2 is that you can do things yourself. Get yourself on golfgtiforum.co.uk for help with anything. If you're not wanting to do that I recommend finding your local VW specialist (there are loads all over the country) and getting to know them.
If you are dead set on selling it advertise it honestly.

Thing is I don't really want to sell it, just getting fed up of noone helping me out when I take it to a garage that my family have used for years .. They just say it's an old car and lots of little things and it's what I should expect from an old car
Sounds like you need to try a different garage.LucyHolmes89 said:

You may be able to diagnose the problem yourself if you do the research. They are a relatively simple car and everything that can go wrong has been experienced thousands of times before. As I said above try joining golfgtiforum.co.uk and asking on there. You could also post in your local Pistonheads forum section and ask if anybody knows a garage local to you. You never know somebody local may even offer to take a look at it for you.

What engine is in it? I'm sure some of these had automatic chokes that could be troublesome.I've been to the garage and because I'm a girl they wont tell me a straight answer as my mechanic doesn't like Volkswagens full stop
Is it turning over fine? Does it feel like its trying to start but not "catching", if you get what I'm saying?

I just don't feel I should have to rely on someone else to take my car to a garage. I'm trying to get hold of a VW specialist at the moment
I personally would say spend some time (read - a lot of time) searching around various mk2 Golf forums on the net. It's a popular car, you wont be the only person in the world ever to have the same symptoms - someone else will have had them, and will have posted on a forum about it. You should be able to find other owners with the same issues who have posted how they went about fixing it, hopefully in simple, easy to follow instructions. You might even find Youtube videos on it, making it even easier! If you can't be bothered to do the above, then you'll have to to it to a (different) garage and pay someone £60+ an hour to do what you could probably do yourself. Choice is yours. I keep telling some of my friends with simple issues like a new CV joint needs replacing on their old cars but they wont do it and instead sell the car at a loss rather than spending the time to learn how to change it themselves - when it is normally pretty easy on older cars.
It's your money and time, you've got two choices really. Just don't use that garage again, ever. They sound like complete pricks.
Check out this website, this topics has been covered many times so I'm sure you'll find the answer there; www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk
Did you check the Golf forum as suggested? These cars are (not to be derogatory
) pretty 'old skool' and others will have had the same problem on numerous occasions in the past nearly 30 years I am sure.
I live in Bolton; if you're located within 45 minutes' driving I can pop over and check the basics (is there a spark? and is fuel getting through? etc) - a message via my username (click on it) is the confidential way to communicate if you don't want to post on here. Got to be cheaper than £60 an hour at a garage that isn't interested
