Hey guys,

Can you get removable harness bars for cars?

Reason I ask is I am looking at a new weekend toy which is going to be track focused one of the ideas (that my wife also approves of) is an RX7. It's something I have always liked and the fact its a 2+2 is a big plus(as we are thinking of kids soon).

This got me thinking could I have a bar to support a harness for track and then take it out when we go to events/shows with the family?

How about those Schroth harnesses that connect to the rear belt points?

I have been considering this same... erm... consideration (sorry wobble ) for either another Cerbera or a Lotus Elan +2. I have never found a solution I can use without permanently making back-seat access difficult.

The best I thought of was a cage with a roof-cross-member halfway over the back seats, used as an anchor for the front seat belts. It ought to be sufficiently out of the way for the back seat passengers but doesn't look fabulous and I'm not 100% convinced it'd be allowed in competition (I haven't read the blue book's musing on this).

Could that bar be removed, my fear is having roll bars/harness bars around the back seat area when having passangers as it wont take a lot for them to smack their head on in an accident.

I would worry about having passengers and any cage, let alone a seatbelt bar. The Schroth ones that MagicalTrevor suggested look ideal!

It's not something I've ever actually implemented but the Cerbera, for example, has a cross member in the roof above the windscreen. It's padded. I thought something similar between the heads of the front and rear rear passengers ought to be enough out the way. Rear passengers' heads describe an arc down and away from that area of the roof in a front-end stop scenario.

You'd be free then to put 4/5/6 point harnesses in the rear for them too.

I'd use this system all the time - removing any reel-inertia system in the process. I got used to using a 4 and 6 point harness in a Caterham as the only restraining system. Being firmly fixed into the car actually feels better, and nice 4 inch wide straps are infinitely safer.
