I'm talking about water of about a foot deep or less. I will often follow the car in front closely behind as they 'part the waves' as it were.

Good practice or not?

Bad, I would say - if they stall or otherwise stop you have to stop too, and are probably mullered then!

What do you do if they stop for any reason? I generally wait until they're through to see if there are any obstacles or potholes concealed by the water.

You'd have to be bloody close for the water not to have become "unparted" directly behind them.

Like 2 inches behind.

So pointless and potentially dangerous I'd suggest.

If you feel the only way you'd drive through the water is by following another vehicle to closely, then it's too deep to drive.

And while it sounds great in principle, if you look the water behind a vehicle isn't really any lower, but is a lot more turbulent.
