SEAT LEON FR/K1
Discussion
Hey guys, After your advise..
OK so ive been searching for a new car, one to look after a family with and have a bit of fun when im using it to get to work, when there not with me.
I really like the look of the seat leon FR or the K1.. Sporty, looks mean but also large and both have a bit of power to them... for there power/size they both give out reasonably good MPG i believe please quote me if im wrong..
Ok, So a few questions..
I basically wont be doing huge journeys or miles, it will probably meet a motorway once a month. Lots of urban driving, (i live in a town not a city so not huge congestion) with a few dual carrage ways..
Im turned off the diesel after hearing horror stories of some sort of injector going (im not car savvy) and for the short journeys ill be doing petrol is going to suit my needs better. So...question time..
First of all good cars & which would you pick?
secondly, can i get the FR in a petrol version?
Thirdly anything else to be aware of or any other suggestions or car recommendations?
Thanks..
p.s I notice a select few on here are all for slandering, i do appriecate your opinions though so please dont shy away.., so if you have something negative/positive to say please take the time to explain why atleast though, furthering my education on the car im thinking of choosing, i am not a car savvy person as mentioned, however that doesnt mean im a bad driver, or dont like having fun in them

i have a new Seat and its sh@te. 17500 miles new gearbox, headlight switch caught fire, boot leaks water, boot lid fills with water and discharges into boot when opened, cruise control creeps speed up,wheel bearing collapsed at 21000, near side rear rattle cant be traced (dealer says they all do it??!!) DPF light on regularly despite lots of motorway use. Its now 18 months old with 30000 on it and awaiting gear linkage part. Its my 1st and last Seat.
I'm lucky in the fact its a company car. I picked it after having 5 VWs that were great. All of them straight up to 100k plus with no drama.
If it were my cash I'd put that bit more in and go VW. I was to told Seat and VW were basically the same thing now. Wrong, if it was it would be wearing a VW badge.

Martyn, i wouldn't be put off by one horror story. There are thousands of happy leon owners out there who have experienced no problems at all. You will find horror stories about literally any car on the 'net, its enough to put you off ever buying any car!
I dont know anything about them though, so cant really add anything. Other than noone makes any truly bad cars any more, so really just buy the car that you want to buy!

I had a 57-plate FR petrol. Shares tons of components with the Golf GTi. So its 2.0 petrol with around 200bhp.
Nice cars. Pretty well equipped but the interior design is very plain, slightly resolved in the 09 models onwards.
We got about 28mpg out of ours around town, low 30's on a run. The only other characteristic to point out is a harsh ride which makes urban motoring a bit of a bind if you prefer a comfy ride.
We had no major mechanical problems on ours. It was also remapped which is a common route for owners as the 2.0 TFSI engine responds really well to a tweak.

I have a 2011 FR TDi 170. The suspension is more comfortable on the facelifted cars than pre facelift(2009 onward I believe). No problems with the car, but I’d probably suggest getting a petrol version if you’re doing mostly town work.
I have the DSG box which I would recommend if you’re considering it. Also try and seek out one with sat nav – makes the dash look a bit better and it’s the same unit found in VW/Audi/Skoda. Multimedia version 2.2 allows you work off of post codes, anything before than doesn’t.
It’s basically a Golf but a little bit more interesting (& cheaper!)

What size wheels did you have on your seat, heard alot of people saying about it being a bumpy ride, but i dont know just how bad it is.. i dont want to feel like im in a go car or have something thats going to cause whiplash for the kids (not acceleration more so bumpyness) but i wouldnt mind something a little rough around the edge.. i suppose i should go and test drive one..
As previously stated, the K1 was just a Cupra with the really horrid "BTCC" body kit stuck onto. The same kit can also be applied to the FR and normal Leon, so if it's just the bodykit look you're after then you can probably source a cheaper Stylance with the kit applied.
For your driving pattern, steer clear of the FR TDI as you probably won't do the DPF any favours. The FR TFSI is probably more your bag.
Face lifted cars (mid 2009 onwards) have slightly better interiors and much more comfortable suspension. If you opt for a pre-face lift then it doesn't really matter what size of wheel (17 or 18) you have on the FR, it's really quite uncomfortable. The Cupra is not afflicted by these issues.
If you go pre-facelift, make sure you pick up one with bluetooth and the larger central display. Plenty of wide boys specced only 18" wheels and now live to regret it.
Remember that the new Leon is just a few months away, so dealers are probably more willing to do a deal to shift some of the forecourt stock.
I love my pre-fl FR TDi but you have to accept it for what it is. Compared to the more mainstream staid Golf, the Leon is a cheap spanish tart in a short dress. You'll have a romping time slapping the arse off her but might feel a bit rough in the morning

You'll get a massive amount of car for your money with a 2009-2011 but mind the residuals, especially in light of the new model coming out.I've had 2 previously. Both 170 Diesels. A 170PD manual and a 170CR DSG.
Both were remapped and ran pretty well.
PD's can be a pain in the hoop injector wise and DPF filter wise although I never had any issues and cover quite a few miles. The injector issue is covered by a recall IIRC.
The CR is a lot smoother and you get much better MPG. Never once had the DPF light on in that.
Pretty good cars and never had any problems with them, would definitely consider another one.

IIRC the early K1 were 300bhp or close to ? it was a special edition of the Cupra R, which was 265hp.
I drove a demo about 5 years ago. Good 4 pot brakes, bit soulless IIRC. Interior lets it down (Mk1 leon was better imho).
Its been out a while, I should imagine a new model is on its way in the next year or two.

K1's were standard Cupras. Standard brakes too. With just a remap they would hit 300bhp.I drove a demo about 5 years ago. Good 4 pot brakes, bit soulless IIRC. Interior lets it down (Mk1 leon was better imho).
