A friend has a Fiesta. She took it to a very well known chain of tyre shops for an MOT and service last week. It failed the MOT on a long list of things with a correspondingly large quote for rectification. She then, belatedly, got in touch with me, I have a part time business fixing cars and I'm an MOT tester, to see if I could fix it cheaper.

A brief perusal has shown that the failure sheet is fiction, it claims 4 brake pipes need replacing, they don't, the rear arm is about to fall off, it isn't, the rear brakes are imbalanced which seeing as they charged her £260 to replace the shoes and cylinders on both sides not three months ago would be odd, and the advisorys are also rubbish.

I then decided to check they'd serviced it correctly, they hadn't. Here's the air filter as I found it.

Now she is too busy/can't be bothered to confront them and is happy for me to fix it and to never darken the doorstep of the well known chain of tyre shops.

Is there any point in me complaining to Trading Standards or somebody of their ilk? It's not my car and she just wants it back soonish which is why she's even less enthusiatic about contacting VOSA.

If they've done a wafty MoT to generate work for themselves isn't it a VOSA job?

Indeed - the best way is to dispute the MOT test officially, but that will require the car being available for inspection, something your lady friend might not want.

I know how to query the MOT, I'm an MOT tester. The vehicle owner doesn't want to go down that route. Is there anything I, as a 3rd party, can do to try and stop the thieving little gits getting away with it? Oh and the well known tyre shop is 60 miles from me so putting the word about locally wont help.

Trading standards ? You can't name and shame on here, but I'm guessing Kwik-Fit, right ? What town ?
I'm thinking trading standards but would they care if I'm not actually the owner?

If it's a chain they typically take their reputation very seriously.

Look up email address here http://www.ceoemail.com/ email and the wrath of head office may well fall on them.

Anything official would have to be by the relative I would think.

<shrug> Some people just want a quiet life. _I_ don't agree with it but she's got a dying mother 250 miles away, she just wants her car back and MOTed ASAP.

Fairy Nuff.

I suspect the best course is just "let it go" in that case. Frustrating though.
