I'm considering buying the above if he takes my offer, it's been on PH for a while, anyone got advice on this I am ex Formula driver looking for something fast, and also something that's Modified under 200 PHP, and not too expensive (in comparison to other track day cars) to run and maintain.

Anyone got any views? I have an MX5, but it's slow in standard trim anyway, thought this or a Honda Civic with mods would be suitable?

I'd be looking at kit cars if it was me - some kind of Lotus Seven-alike, probably.

Sure why do you say a Kit Car? And can you get something decent for around £2k ish? I need to drive it to the circuit as not keen on towing!

I've got a 172 cup that I have tracked. They are great fun and surprise a few cars too smile I'm not sure you would get single seat race car satisfaction out of it, but you could do a lot worse as a track car.

I'm looking at doing exactly the same thing, but buying a standard road going Cup and stripping it out ourselves.

I turbo'd my MX5 for £500. It fixed the "slow". Nothing much else wrong with the MX5.

Why not just strap a turbo or supercharger to the MX5?

With regard to the car highlighted, I'm not sure I'd want to pay £3,000 for a car with Rokkor coilovers.

Because anything mass produced is going to be dull and inert simply because it's too heavy. I wouldn't want a track car weighing over 600kg and I'd prefer under 500. Even my Elise feels heavy and dull-witted on the track, and it's generally reckoned to be pretty good as road focussed cars go.

You probably can't get anything worth having for 2k, though. More like 4k seems to be the starting point.

ETA: For 2k, I think a forced induction MX5 sounds like a reasonable plan if you can find one.

Interesting JQ mentions ''Rokkor coilovers'' as I wondered what brand that was -so are you saying these coilovers are *rap?

FYI they are the cheapest kit you can buy and of very dubious quality. I'd not be trusting my neck at high speed with these on, it also indicates the rest of the car could have been done on the cheap.

For your budget I'd be looking at a Kart and doing some karting instead of TDs. Your kart will be far from the fastest thing out there for that budget, but it will be fun nonetheless.

For TD's nothing beats a kit car or ex formula car, but you won't find one within budget. If you must have a tin top, I'd recommend a Mk1 MR2. Friend had one for TD's until it blew up and that was great fun, even compared to his S2 190 Elise.

Definitely not interested in Karting, On my budget I will have to just get a tin-top and from this point of view it seems to me that the Clio's are very popular TD car?

If you find an elise dull on track then how can you be recommending an mx5?

A 172 would be a good choice, or some other cheap hatch (which has possibly already been stripped and caged) like a 106 xsi. I've seen some nice clio 16v for around 2k also.

You're doing it wrong, all the Elise needs is more power...

There's plenty of cars that are fun on track, that are WAY over 600KG.. Try something like an EP3 Type-R, MR2 Turbo or maybe even a Turbo charged MX5.

You'll have a whale of a time whatever you're in, trust me on that!

So what would you choose that's sharper than an Elise that's available for 2k?

Oh any car can be fun on track - I've enjoyed thrashing a standardish 2CV around a circuit. That doesn't mean I'd pick one as a track car, though.

I'm sure the Clio above would be fantastic fun on track, I'm just wondering whether it's the most fun car available for the money.

Agreed.

I think a more realistic budget is about 5k. You can get a decent powered car for about that, and it'll save a lot of money buying a car that's already set up.
