Perhaps it's a bit pedantic to worry about this but I'm considering fitting Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 2's to my '07 Audi S6 and am wondering what to use as a spare?

Perhaps I should just go witht he conti 5's all round.

Edit - I suppose I should have said the spare (as I recently found) is deeply cut on the side wall so I'll have to get 5 new tyres.

confused
use anything legal. Presumably (in the highly unlikely event that you'd need to) you'd 'only ever need to use it for as far as it is to get a new tyre put on the ordinary wheel anyway.

For thespare I've got the cheapest I could in my size (an Event hehe). At the end of the day it's only there until I can get the damaged (good) tyre fixed/replaced.

In the Escort for reasons I cannot remember I've got the same tyre as what's on the car, which is a directional tyre. The tyre shop reckoned that when using a directional tyre as a spare, it's best to fit it as if it is on the nearside due to the majority of punctures being on the left. Not sure how much truth is in that but it made sense to me (crap ending up on roadside).

Hmmm. V10 Audi, high speed hoon or holiday in France or visiting a client - half way through - do you want a short break to fit the spare and then carry on as normal or are you happy to be delayed whilst Kwik Fit or the continental equivalent wait for a week for the correct tyre? Fit a propoer tyre on the spare.

(As an aside F1s are usually best on lighter cars with Mich and C's for heavy Audis etc.)

Fit spare - carry on as normal. That's definitely me. If I change the tyres now the Conti SC3's from the back can provide a good spare.

Pedantic mode:

I believe any spare tyre/wheel which doesn't match the other tyre/wheel on the same axle (in other words a space-saver or any other oddball spare) is supposed to be marked with a clear warning "For emergency use only. Maximium speed 50 mph".

If it's not fully compliant you're at risk of getting nicked for driving with illegally mixed tyres.

If you do that, make sure to pick the newest one, rather than the one with the most tread.

Which is why the asymmetric tyres put my nose out a bit. Conti 5's although directional are not asymmetric. Michelin SS's are right?
