germ/jap under 5k awd/4wd car good on fuel - not jeep ??

Hi

Just wondering if there are any awd/4x4's under 5k that someone could recommend.

Examples I can think of

audi 2.5 tdi quattro
vw passat 1.9tdi 4 motion.


Anything else ? did mazda do anything??

Original Audi S3. Half a ton lighter than many new cars. Only a 1.8 so not bad on fuel. AWD plus winters = good progress
