Had to be at work earlier today due to needing to leave that bit earlier this evening. Setting off at half 6 returned 56mpg

Setting off at the usual time of 7am returns 38 mpg

Setting off 30 minutes earlier every day would save over £500 a year

But is that extra half hour in bed worth £500 sleep

I used to leave home for work between 4.30am & 5.30am and travel a mixture of town/A/B and motorway roads.

Compared to the 8am start I could do it about 7mpg better if I was nice!

But lincolnshires roads aren't that empty very often so conversely I'd find a nice hoon on the way to a 12 hour shift would cheer me right up.

15-25mpg compared to mud 30s hurt though

I couldn't get out of bed to work at those times unless I was hauled out by a tractor.

But, if you don't mind too much, give it a go. You'll be home earlier and the most productive time of the day is often first thing in the morning, before all the interruptions start.

Having worked in logistics and heavy industry all my adult life..... Both operate a shift system, meaning that I got well used to seeing my faviourite A/B roads at 4-7am when no-one else was about and it was a warm summers morning.

Now December/January, ice & snow...... and a 200SX with a death wish, was a little less fun.

I'd take an extra half hour in bed over 500 quid a year, but assuming that extra mpg is due to spending less time stuck in traffic jams I'd probably pick getting up earlier and go to bed half an hour earlier to compensate.

I drove to the airport (an hour's drive) in the gas guzzler on Monday, sat at a very slow to average pace as I was early. Was shocked at how little the fuel gauge had moved.
Won't have to fill it up when I come home smile
I'll probably ruin it all on the run back though all excited to see Santa.

A quick bit of maths will reveal how much you get to be not in bed wink

You must have a very similar commute to me OP, I have the exact times and figures, it's scary actually!

Anyway, I've decided to just mix it up a little, if I've spent a lot that week I'll go for mpg and it I feel particularly tired that day I'll take the extra bit of sleep. Generally it's a tank of petrol every week anyway though so I must be tired and skint in equal measure wink

Interesting dichotomy that.

I struggle like holy fook to get up for work in the morning as I probably didn't get enough sleep.

Despite this, I won't go to bed early as I think I might miss something!

Having kids doesn't help either, (1 & 3yr old), they don't do lie ins.

Anyway, lie in vs +MPG......Bedtime for me.

£2.73 for half an hours sleep sounds reasonable (assuming you work 365 days a year though)

I'm assuming the improvement in MPG is down to less traffic, rather than just some time-based physics weirdness.

So I'd get up early, have an easy/cheap drive to work, leave early, and get more than the extra half hour at the end of the day to sleep.

I've worked shifts, moving your sleep pattern half an hour is nothing.

If you arrive early, can you leave early? If so, I vote earlier start smile
If not, bed- obviously. Unless the traffic is stop/start and it stresses you out.

Do you get to leave early? Thus avoiding more traffic and saving more money?

Or does it not work like that for a powerfully built company director such as yourself? wink

Either way, get up earlier if you are able to. (Or get up earlier when you feel like it).

It's not the mpg, and god knows I love being aslepp, but I am up at 5.30 and in work by 6.30 simply because of the stress of driving to Leeds over the pennines on the M62 every day, this means that I finish at three and usually means I avoid the huge jams caused by crashes.

I'm terribly tired all the time though.

That extra half hour in bed is costing you roughly 52p/day, I'd say it's definitely worth it and sod the economy but that's just me and I like to sleep.
