The ultra-brilliance Hlafords own brand bulbs (claimed 120% extra brightness wtf that means, Lumens?) are on BOGOF at the moment.

Are they any good? They sell roughly equivalent Bosch bulbs for the same price but not on the BOGOF offer...

In my experience, Halfords branded tools and components are of comparible quality to mainstream brands.

Seem brighter than standard bulbs, but they don't seem to last that long in my experince.

I got one of the 90% extras (with the intention of replacing the other if it was significantly brighter) and notice no difference looking at both lights. So either I already had a 90% brighter bulb in the other one, or there is no difference.

Mind you, they do say "up to" 90% brighter so strictly speaking they aren't lying.

Tried Halfords bulbs 3 times, all broke within a few months, never again.

A few years ago, Halfords bulbs were more expensive than genuine Honda bulbs.

Google the part number and go from there.

Know anyone with a trade card? The markup on bulbs is obscene.
The trade card doesn't always give good discounts on posh bulbs, just the cheapy ones.

No. Go to your local factors and get RING ones. About £3-£7 each unless you're driving something special.

Same brightness.

Used all sorts over the years

If it's of any help, these guys sell genuine Osram nightbreakers for about £11-£12 plus P&P depending on fitment for a set . I've bought two sets from them in the best and they are really good.

Fitted some once....as I say...Once... Lasted approx 2 months, then I started to get into the habit of going to the trade counter and getting Bosch for £1.90 each
Since then though...I have begun to keep an eye on Lidl/Aldi for when they have pairs of bulbs on sale....usually at £3.99 per pair. Lidl's are made by Tesla (who own Osram) and the Aldi ones are made by Trifa of Germany.
Currently I have the Trifa Xenon Plus (google it) which were branded as autoXS (aldi brand) these are +50%... been in for over a year now and I have a german sourced dipped headlight DRL module on too

Yer pays yer money....

If all these bulbs are what, 55w for an H4, how can one be any brighter than another?

I did experiment during my younger years with higher wattage bulbs, they do make a difference...they melt your wiring! biggrin

Actually, there's a point, why don't you get energy saving bulbs for cars. Not to save energy, but so that a 55W bulb will be brigher?
You do, they're called Halogens and, more recently, LEDs.

I've always found Halfords bulbs to be fine. I've never had to replace one that I've fitted. Never noticed that they're appreciably brighter either, though.

55W is the INPUT power to the bulb. Normal filament bulbs only turn about 10% of the electricity they use into light - so a 55W filament bulb is putting out about 5.5W of light. This is why halogens are so much brighter than filaments, and why LEDs will be even brighter than Halogens. The 55W limit was put in place when legislators assumed that all bulbs would be around 10% efficient, modern headlights exploit a loophole in the law, they were never intended to be allowed.

Can you buy say, a H4 fitment LED bulb? to fit in any car?

I haven't seen any, but that's possibly because I haven't actually looked for them.
Good question, I haven't either. I see no reason why not, though.

I got some halford ultra brilliance ones last month with their bog off offer. Cheaper that way then trade card as with my trade card it only knocked a fiver off each bulb. 15 quid cheaper with big off.
Seem much better than the eBay blue specials that I got last year. I can now see where I'm going.

They exist but are not road legal I understand (off road and show use only).
Also Trade Card discounts are only significant for Halfords brand stuff - bulbs often with 90% discount smile Other brands its often only about 10%.
