Ok so going on the advice of the Met Office who predicts a bad UK winter I have bought some winter wheels and tyres. Just returned from the US and had planned to fit them before I left as it was predicted a cold spell in the UK, sods law I did not and my wife clunked the alloys while I was away...anyhow was wondering when are you supposed to fit these things? Are they they lethal at temps above 7 degrees, snow use only?

What do you lot do? Clearly I want to get a few seasons use of them but dont want to try and fit them in a foot of snow, asked my cousin in Chicago what he did, but he was no use as he left them on all year round as he is a lazy git!

I think November - April is a good sort of time frame. Get them on now really.

Winter tyres are not snow tyres! they will of couse work better in snow than summer tyres and of course are at there best bellow 7degrees! you can use them anytime of year but they will wear very quickly in the warmer months.

Mine have been on for a few weeks and will be staying on until March or April, temperature-dependant.

Just put them on after halloween and take them off at Easter. You can drive on them all year if you like, so it doesn't really matter.

It is less fun putting them on when it's freezing outside, so I'd stick them on now.

December 21st to March 20th.

They won't work properly outside these dates.

I do nov-april.

Even the most dedicated winter/snow tyre will still be ok on mild weather days.
You'll probably not notice the difference on dry roads unless you're really pushing it.

Don't fit them till it has snowed.

That way you can do a back to back test and please video it and post it on youtube.

Thanks.

Or as others have said, fit them in time for the start of winter and remove them (if you want) after winter is finished. It will probably depend on where about you live and other circumstances that will dictate the best time for you to do this.

And just to say the winter tyres I changed for new ones a few days ago, had lasted for about 45,000 miles/2 years constant daily use through winter, spring, summer and autumn twice. I don't think that is an excessive wear rate.

Unless clunked means something different to you and him, than what it does to me.

You should do it early as they're probably not optimal when they're new - requires a bit of wear to get rid of the factory surface.
