On the news this morning, you can have a black box fitted to your car which records how well you drive, which in turn can be shown to the insurance companies to lower (or raise) your insurance premiums confused

Something to do with gender discrimination I believe...

Wonder if it records 0-60 times and degrees of opposite lock scratchchin

Sounds like Big Brother to me...

I'm seriously considering one for my landrover

Seeing it only measures acceleration and speed it could save me stloads as the landrover is as slow as fk

from the ones i looked into they don't connect into the ecu or the vehicle electronics at all, other than for power, they use internal sensors and GPS only
presumably they can detect ignition being on via the voltage from the alternator, possibly could detect rpm on a petrol atleast, although that might be unreliable and hard to calibrate so i doubt they do.

Pretty much every car on the road today has whats known as an OBD2 port on it, the protocol on these and the hardware to get the information is fairly standard. So I dont think it would be much trouble to connect 1 or 2 wires into the system to take vehicle speed and engine rpm values into the unit.

These will not be used to lower premiums. Accept them at your peril!

Although it's been talked about a lot for quite a while now I saw the section of the news the OP is talking about. It was worrying the way they spoke about it as something that everyone should be encouraged to do. They then showed the news anchor driving and edited it to make it look like she'd driven badly before giving the shock result that the blackbox was pleased with her driving, thus potentially lowering her premium.

If too many people are persuaded to have one fitted surely we're one step closer to them being mandatory?

Mine starting of with everything at the score of 1 (very poor) and then suddenly drastically improved to 5 so they only had to do one refund.

I like to think both my cars are too primitive for black boxes to be easily installed- especially the Caterham which has carbs and a distributor cool
They'll just have to take my word for it when I say that I wouldn't dream of accelerating or braking hard, exceeding a speed limit or pulling any lateral 'G'...

These "black boxes" are very easy to install in a modern car as all the info you need is carried in the Can Bus system on the vehicle, older cars without CanBus can be retro fitted without to much trouble and as stated already the black box will have all the other tricks built in, such as a GPS engine, modem, accelerometers etc.

I think if insurance companies had there way all cars would be fitted with them.

It's a stupidity test. If you accept and have one of these fitted, the insurance companies know you are a bit silly and therefore more likely to crash wink

What will happen in a few year is they will grow to the point where everyone will have to have one to get a policy at a good price. Then prices will stablise for everyone with a box and it won't be much cheaper. For the few who wont have one they will have to pay huge premiums.

Or whether you'll opt to have one installed and pay £2k less on your first car for a year and all you have to do is drive sensibly.

No one should get one, all it will take is a minority to take it up and it will become compulsory for all new cars; then say goodbye to car enthusiasm, we're all be driving around in restricted 107s.

Forget the fine and loss of licence, perhaps I may get scouted for a shot at a WRC drive after they see the route I take to my girlfriends house? biggrin
