State the number you put in the ad.

Every time someone asks this, give them that number.

And, as if by magic:

Thanks for your quick response, Ok just wanted to make sure nothing

is been left out. i was introduced to this site by a friend at

work. I am well satisfied with the description on your ad,Though i

will not be able to make cash payment due to my tight schedule. But

am ready to make paypal as my method of paying, Send your PayPal

email address to me so I can pay you and proceed with the

transaction,I am using only PayPal. This is because PayPal is the

most secured and safest way to transact online. I will arrange with

someone to have this picked up from your location once i have paid

and also what is your final price again. In the meantime, can you

send me more pictures (if available)?
I hope to read from you soon.
Thanks.

Scam the scammer.

Accept his generous offer and let him pay by Paypal.

When his 'Friend' comes to pick the car up tell him there is no car for sale, dont know what your on about,Paypal account must have been hacked,ect...

Ok,he'll get his money back through Paypal but at least you would have caused him a bit of inconvenience.

What irks me about 'name your best price' is it feels like lazy negotiation to me.

I have made my first gambit, it is called an asking price. Either make a counter offer and we can haggle, or pay the asking price.

This 'name your best price' stuff is trying to shift the risk from their first offer. IE: If I name a dreduced price, it removes the risk at them coming in even higher on their first counter offer, thus saving them money.

I don't see why I should inherit that risk off you. My best price is the asking price, you disagree that that is fair, make an offer, and we will see what happens.

I had some alloys advertised recently for £950.

I got asked what my best price was, and countered with "make your best offer".

The best offer was £150.

Cretin.

Exactly. I don't know why you wouldn't simply speak to the seller on the phone anyway.

What I don't understand about these very common scams is that they cannot work without the knowledge of Paypal. Wonder why Paypal doesn't clamp down on it? But then I guess Paypal is part of Ebay - the ultimate "couldn't give a t055ers".

Ok so being a bit thick here but if they pay with paypal why is it a scam, do they take the car then try and get the money back via paypal somehow ?

When bwgotiating witb a stranger sometimes being a cock and making a silly offer is a sensible approach.
You're not trying to make friends, your trying to save money.

Then again, if it's a fair price sometimes it's worth just paying the asking price.

I've made some very silly offers on things recently and been pleasantly surused to get some good deals.
No doubt the seller has a nasty story about me, but nobody forced them to sell.

They use a hacked account to pay for the car. Then when it's noticed, paypal refund the money. Leaving you with nothing.

You can however, set up a new paypal account. Take money. Buy stuff on ebay. Close account... but that's up to you wink

I love final price stories where the seller gets the hump with the question and raises the price by some amount only for the "giz yer final price" muppet to buy it at the newly elevated price.

Correct but does cause a few problems for the person who had the account hacked originally.

Moral of the story leave your paypal account balance at a nice healthy Zero.
