Basically I'm looking for a few suggestions for my first car (yes you read that right, first car,) so this means nothing above a 1.3 really due to insurance . BUT! Before you hurl abuse or disregard this post, I'm looking for something considerably different to a hateful Saxo or a boring Corsa, I've been looking old Chevettes, yes I know it'll be broken most of the time, but it's rear wheel drive, and this makes me happy because I'm childish and driving is fun, so any contributions would be most welcome!

Maybe something like a Starlet SR or a classic Beetle?

The mini I have looked into, I drove my friends and it was so fun, however he sold his due to it being a huge money pit, and I'm put off by that prospect unfortunately, and I'm afraid the Beetle is up there with the saxo for my most hated cars!

I have been looking at the Starlets actually, don't suppose you've had any experience with them?

These 'help' titles and crying smilies should really be reserved for people who actually need help quickly.

Eg - Someone halfway through a DIY job and is stuck.

I wish you luck trying to find an SR actually, as they are pretty damn rare.

They're very reliable, and light, so a perfect car for an enthusiast. But obviously don't look at Glanzas etc, because you have no chance.

Oh, and we've got a Mini (me and the bro) and it's been an expensive rollercoaster ride, trust me on that!

Good on you for wanting an interesting car, very rare these days with first timers! And I think its a valid help thread, remember how keen you were to get your first car? It was all I thought about!

Triumph Dolomite? Forget the sprint but a 1300/1500 would be fun and insurable.

I never even thought about a Dolly, I'll definitely have a look into those

Bear in mind that just because a car is rwd doesn't mean it's any good!

I know, but I like it when I feel more 'direct' with the driving experience, something modern cars seem to lack, and It's an added bonus if I can get the back end to play abit too

And equally being old doesnt mean that its cheap to insure. A Porsche 924 would be a good example: I can insure one for under £100 (my 944 Turbo is only £150!) but theyre still a Group20 car or whatever that is now and the insurance for a daily driven 924 for an 18 year old would be frightening.

The most bang for your buck possible.
Also comes in 1300 and 1600 cc flavours which will be slower but cheaper to insure.

Oh and how old are you?

Yeah insurance prices are ridiculous, I was quoted £50,000 from renault directly to be insured on my fathers 2.0 diesel Laguna last year when I was 17, it's absurd. I'm 18 now and the Chevette I mentioned was quoted at £1600 to insure, which is the cheapest quote I've had for any car believe it or not.

I'm in the same dilemma, to be insured on my mums 1.2 corsa it would be £1200, and thats pointless for me, as I would get little to no use. She has me looking at a Rover P6 at the moment as her friend is selling one. I am sort of tempted, but I assume, not really looked into them as such, it will be a HUGE money pit.
