Hi PH'ers,

Up to now, I've worked from home or very local to home and been able to enjoy driving my E39 M5 & E46 330. Now the time has come where I'm going to be commuting daily 40-60 miles each way so 100-120 miles daily.

I'm looking for suggestions on what car to get that is of similiar build quality/comfort/looks but much better MPG. Would a E39 530d do the job?

Looking at £5k as the max to spend.

Any tips would be appreciated smile

My commute is around 96 miles in total. I ran a E39 520i SE Auto Touring for a while and never saw better than 29mpg. I swapped it for an E46 330i Sport Auto saloon in April of this year..........and get 29mpg! As a driver's car, the 330i is leagues better, although the old E39 was a comfy old motorway barge.

I did think about the 3 litre diesel, as it should get another 10mpg over the petrol. However, at my price range (around £4k) I was looking at cars with 100-120k on the clock and thoughts of turbo/injector replacements didn't appeal, unless you can factor in £1500-2000k for replacements. Plus with diesel being around 9p/litre more expensive, and the purchase price of the diesels that much more, I bagged a nice 330i for just under £4k.

Soooooooo, I'd stick with the E46 if I were you smile

Keep the 330, keep the speed down on the multi lane stuff. If that doesn't do the job and the MPG really genuinely is killing you and if it's a good car you want to keep LPG it.

Turns out I might not be commuting 120 miles a day but more 60ish - MEH...

Never used to get over 20mpg in my 330ci but maybe that was a bad example? 160k miles on the clock/remapped/aftermarket wheels/induction kit. People have been saying they get 35mpg town driving which doesn't sound bad afterall...

330Cd's look tidy aswell. I've always wanted a ClioSport 182 but no ideas on real life MPG - any other tips guys?
