Need a family car for the Mrs and imminent first child. Which would you choose. She's a competent driver, a little binary on the throttle, not hugely mechanicaly sympathetic...

Thoughts / opinions?

Not been able to decide.

The one she prefers.

Presumably both come with leather seats (wipe-clean) and the Isofix trappings (if you want them). The one with the widest opening rear doors would be another good criteria (for gettng the baby carrier in and out).

B10 for me. Like the S4's very much but an Alpina is much more 'special'. Get a good one and maintain it properly and you shouldn't lose too much. I have a feeling the S4's have a way further to go in terms of depreciation.

Seems standard these days to buy a 2.5 tonne SUV to transport one seven pound infant !

We had a 5 door Golf, was ok for 2 kids but went to a Volvo 850 for three and then the dreaded people carriers when they got bigger.

Basically anything 5 door makes life easier.

From the list, the BMW.

Neither.

In my experience few passengers enjoy being thrown around by fast driving in a saloon or estate with over firm suspension.

The alternative is easily achievable: saloon or estate for the family and a sports car for enjoyment.

The Audi is probably the more practical choice but I`d go for the exclusivity of the Alpina, it`s a lot rarer.

If the little lady is 'binary' with the throttle, I would have thought 4wd would be a good idea...

As you already own the Alpina.. isn't the choice already made for you?

This ^

It's pretty much the only car you'll ever need.

...unless another two tin lids come along...

S4 is always going to be "not an rs4"

Alpina more exclusive and although it took me a while to get beyond "its all about a couple of buttons" I now quite like them.

A b5 for example I eant

Looks like we may stick with the B10 for a while after all. Really struggling to find an alternative.

Box? Oh, you'll be wanting a Nissan Cube then.

Seriously though, the S-Max mit grosser benzine Motor is a nice enough bus to pedal about.
And 'er indoors will love it.

Or a Porsche Cayenne, of course.
