So been thinking this for a while now but for the fear of being ostracized have not said a word. I much prefer a F50
to a F40
. Its 4.7 litre V12 N/A with 520 bhp is much more preferable to me than the F40 2.9 litre twin turbocharged V8 478 bhp. The looks of the F50 far more fluid than that the angular F40 IMHO. I know i will be in the minority here and will most probably be crucified for my opinion, but just wanted to know how the average PH'er though.
^^^
^^

Now to make it clear im in no way criticizing the F40! How could you? But if it were my money/ lotto win it would be a F50 for me. Let the onslaught begin.......

F50 all the way, I was just thinking about making this thread the other day.
Why did the F50 get such bad press compared to the F40? I'd take that F1 derived NA engine any day. It looks like a much nicer car too. The F50 might be my favourite Ferrari, the F40 wouldn't make the top 5.

So that would be the F50 GT rather than the vanilla F50. Only 3 built including the prototype, and not put into full production. The F50 was 520bhp.I never liked the looks of the F50, it just looks odd to me; the F40 is so much cleaner. I think I can appreciate the F50 more now than when it was released, but looks-wise, still the F40. To drive - well, I'll never get the chance to find out.
The F40 is the one I'd choose, the F50 doesn't do anything for me. It may be the better car but the F40 makes my balls tingle, whilst the F50 excites them just as much as Thatcher in a corset and stockings.
However I have never driven either so my opinion may change if I ever got the chance.

I grew up in the 90's so the F50 was the Ferrari supercar of the time. I've grown to appreciate the F40 over time and love them but they're nowhere near an F50 in my affections.
I saw one in Puerto Banus for three consecutive years back in the late 90's. Owned by an ex-pat (and apparently currently holed up in Marbella's police impound). Every time I saw it the guy was gunning it between lights and the sound of that V12 is something I'll never forget.
It never got the praise it deserved for me, at least until I read the Evo comparison and they stated it was the best handling of the lot.

I seem to recall a video of Clarkson driving the F50, saying the engine was a wondrous thing but the gear change was so brutal it ruined the drive completely and made it feel like you were being punched in the spine every time you shifted gear. True?
I dont think there was anything particularly wrong with the gearchange.I seem to remember that the rear suspension was directly bolted to the engine and gearbox which was bonded directly to the chassis. This meant that all the vibrations from the engine and load through the suspension was transmitted stright through the chassis into the cockpit.....or something like that.I suppose you would have to drive one to know what that meant.Personally loved the F50.Looks good and sounds great which is all that matters in a car like that.
