anyone got an insurance quote since the new gender rule?
Discussion
thought id get a quote yesterday to see if it is now cheaper for me
currenty pay £540 and found £475 on comparison site so over 10% cheaper for me
one of the moneyadvice websites was suggesting some people paying over a grand could cancel policy and start a new one which could save hundreds.

I'm not impressed. The OHs insurance (mid 40's professional female, 20+years licence and NCB, no points ever) for a 7 year old Volvo V70 2.4 Auto - renewal (LV) £461. Best other quote - £670!!!
To put this into perspective - I'm 4 years younger than she is and pay £390 for a brand spanking new SLK250CDI AMG. WTF - how does that work?
I'd have expected her premiums to be sub £300 (as they were for her previous Merc C220 CDi Coupe).

I've not had a quote yet, but I don't really understand the changes.
Insurance is based on risk, how old, where you live, age, etc - so why not gender as the stats show there is a big difference.

I also tried it on my dad's Boxster which he has recently sold and it was £863.

I'm certainly not complaining!

Still seems strange though, if women are statistically safer drivers why shouldn't they pay less?
TX.
Nicked from the LV= website:TX.
Council Directive 2004/113/EC is known as the EU Gender Directive.
It relates to a requirement across the EU for equal treatment between men and women. In particular it prohibits considering gender when calculating the cost of insurance.
Following the Test-Achats ruling in March 2011, the European Court of Justice removed an exemption which allows gender specific pricing for insurance contracts because of statistical differences in risk.
As a result, from 21 December 2012, EU insurers can no longer consider gender when calculating an insurance quote.
Hypothetically, imagine if statistically white people were 3x as likely to crash as another race were. Would it be "alright" to charge more based on race?
Would it be OK to charge more if you were Christian than if you were Pagan?
Would it be OK to charge more if you were liberal than conservative?
Would it be OK to charge more if you were straight than gay?
There are lots of observations you could make statistically that it'd be a really bad idea for insurance premiums to take into account: Race, Religion, Politics, Sexual Preferences, etc etc etc.
Just add gender to the list. Age might be next (but instead, insurance companies will look at "how long you have held a license" as a measure of experience, which is tantamount to the same thing.)
