Almost time to change the Mrs runabout car, at the moment it's a Fiesta ST but it's dire on on fuel and expensive on road tax, so for up to around £10k are there any hatchbacks with cheap roadtax, good on fuel and maybe 4wd ?.

Keep the Fiesta, it's pointless spending double what you'd get for it to save pennies on tax and fuel. Teach her how to drive it economically (yawn) instead.

Sorry but buying a car just because it has cheaper road tax is madness. You'll save what £100 a year (less than 2 tanks of fuel) and end up with a car based purely on this fact?

Get whichever car you like the most.

It would be madness just to save on the roadtax but we're thinking about a change anyway so may as well get something that does nearly twice as many mpg and less than half the road tax.

Fiat Panda surely? Small engine = less road tax, 4WD = well, not quite sure what benefit this is on such a car, but horses for courses and all that.

Golfs 4wd

1 Series is worst case scenario if 4wd is preferred (being RWD & all)
