The Audi bashing thread
Discussion
Just watching the Audi Ugly Duckling advert, and it seems to be true in reverse for me.
They used to produce such desirable models (UR Quattro, 100, 200)
Now each one I see looks identical in white, with massive alloys, just a different configuration, compact, whale, SUV, like washing machines.
The last one I drove, a A4 2.0 TDi was the most uninvolving experience I think I've ever had in a car.
I've owned Audis and held them in high regard,
The brand is taking a bashing and the styling has all gone a bit bling IMHO.

I can see his point. For the most part the generic Audi's on the road.
There are two local to me. One an A3 another A4, both white. Both black wheels, both black roof, both black wingmirrors, both the newer shaped ones.
When I see one, as much as I try to see which model it is I cant via the wingmirrors at all.
Normally wait until I turn off or they do to see if one has a boot on the back!
However, this seems no different to any other car make now.

I`m not a huge modern Audi fan, I prefer their older stuff where it seemed to be about hewn from granite build quality rather than image.
Not saying their badly built now but it doesn`t seem to be their main concern anymore.
Nice cars but I can always seem to find something else I`d rather be driving.
Can`t see this thread ending well though OP, lots of Audi fans on PH

They've made some nice cars in the past, I still like the current, soon to be replaced RS6, the D2 A8 and S8 were brilliant cars. It is sad that these days, for 90% of their customers, owning an Audi is about status, getting a bog spec diesel and driving it like they've got something to prove, rather than owning a car because its a car they actually like.
A1, A5 and R8 look great. Others just look like cars.
A colleague has an A1 and it seems to be fine from passenger seat, everything is solid and it is fairly comfortable.
A mate has the previous model RS4 Avant. That is great. He reckons it has better ride quality than the S-Line A4 tdi he swapped it for.
A lot of them seem to be very badly driven around here, especially diesel Q7s.

This is the biggest thing that puts me off an Audi. However good they may or may not be as a car, the image they now give off is not one I wish to be part of. As someone in my mid twenties, the only cars a certain group of my peers want to drive are A3s and Golfs. They are somehow blinkered to seeing just 5% of the car market. I find it rather sad.

Yeah, look at how bad their sales figures are.
Oh.

These two things are related.I don't really mind audi, they make some quite nice cars. It more if there is someone an inch away from my back bumper, 80% of the time a rep in a audi. (Nearly 100% a german car though, never been tail-gated by a saab or renault for example) But I think this is mainly because there are so many of them on the roads around here (I.e, higher number of cars, therefore more likely to meet an idiot in said car) there are far more audi's than fords, vauxhalls, PSA etc around here.
So, not Audi, Audi drivers, which there are more of.

For sure if you want to talk about image, then Audi are a victim of their own success. They've built up a massively desirable brand, so unsurprisingly, people desire them.
But that's no different to where BMW and Mercedes have been in the past (BMW especially).
Does that make them bad cars? Only if "image" is the over-riding factor in whether or not you like a car (so yes then for an ever increasing number of people on PH these days who seem so hard of thinking that they have to form their views based entirely on the teachings of Top Gear...)

I'm sort of against the +20 model range that they are producing. An estate, cabriolet, and SUV version of every model isn't needed. And why so much S/RS models. The exclusivity is gone I'm afraid. The top days
were indeed the quattro, 100/200, D2, the first RS's, ... might just be a nostalgic feeling, but I'll stick
to that era for now, and certainly will never sell my RS2 for one of the newer less soulfull bits.
