I'm looking for a cheap workhorse, and was looking for a Pugeot 406 estate hdi as I've had one before and it was very reliable and cheap to run.
Any way I've started to look at 02 onwards Mondeo TDCIs but have no experience of them, so if it anyone could let me know what they're like to live with and what to look out for, then it would much appreciated!

Get yourself onto www.talkford.co.uk, quite a helpful lot on there and a decent buyers guide.

I think flywheels and injectors are a pricey fix on the diesels.

I had one for a couple of years. Put 25k on it with only minimal servicing and apart from the odd wheel bearing never put a foot wrong. Sold it in march with 170k and often wonder why I didn't keep it. Comfy,48 mpg, acres of space and a superb quick clear screen.

Common faults are flywheels, injectors, fuel pumps, turbos and that's about all I can think of.

Pick them up for relative peanuts nowadays make it worth the gamble.

If looking at leggy examples make sure it`s had a clutch/flywheel at some point as it`s a costly job.

Exactly this. The early TDCi unit is really problematic at high miles. Some fuel delivery related problems are really really difficult o diagnose, and then bloody expensive to fix!
I speak from experience, and if you do browse TalkFord you'll see I'm not alone.
I've also had the clutch master cylinder split which coated the clutch in fluid, and when we opened it all up the DMF was pretty dead too.
That car has been a money pit. Lovely drive when it's going, but it ain't going often!
Just don't get a Mondy, please. (Unless you want mine. It hasn't turned a wheel for 3 months with...... A fuel supply problem!!)

Just managed to pick up a Peugeot 406 hdi 110 estate for 400 quid ! Has just broken 200k but has a full service history, and has had a recent turbo change.
The other bonus is that it's the Executive model which benefits from heated leather seats with electric adjustment; and a sunroof!
Let frugal motoring commence!!
