I have been on the look out for a new car for about three weeks now, My golf went the other day so I have the cash waiting. I am looking for a mid size diesel as I do between 24,000-30,000 miles a year.

Looking for something which is a decent size as my golf was to small even with the seats down, Looks nice and drives well and has some power. I have looked at the following cars:

ST TDCI
Accord CTDI - Maybe a little too small
9-3 Tid - Not really keen to be honest unless it was a really good buy
S60 - Same as above really
320D - Insurance is too much
A4's - for around £2500 the mileage is well over 100k
Mazda 6 - Heard a few mechanical problems such as injectors.

I have about £2500 for the car, mileage I would like to see below 100k but its not a deal breaker if its been looked after, Insurance cant be too high.

Losing the will to live looking at all these cars, Ideally I would like an ST TDCI but theres very few about for £2500.

Thanks in advance

Strike the Mazda 6 diesel off the list. Many many problems with the derv engine.
Mondeo ST / A4 at this price range unlikely to be pretty and more likely to be owned by the type of people (at this end of the market) who skimp on maintenance.
Look for a nice privately owned s60 D5 with proper history. They will be out there.

Perhaps consider a Passat estate 1.9Td 130PS, great engine with decent load space.

I was thinking about a VAG Tdi but after having a few problems with the golf its put me off to be honest, The cams went, turbo started sticking and a few other little bits. Cost me a fortune!

150 Golf per chance? If so cams are a common issue on these, and its only the 150s that suffer

130 Passats are bombproof as long as they are looked after properly, for £2500 I can't think of a better, cost effective load lugger that covers vast miles with ease

Mk1 Octavia hatch or estate with the 130PS engine, possibly a Mk1 Superb saloon with the same engine (although pushing the budget). Both have lots of space in the boot.

Yeah can't see you getting a st tdci at that price. I paid 4500 for one a few months ago and felt I got a good deal.

Cheapest I saw anywhere was 3000 and it was a pice if crap!

Thanks for the advice, Might be worth keeping an eye on some Passat's.

Been looking everyday to see if anything new has come on, I have about two weeks left to find one so hopefully something will crop up.

OP, shame you are in the north and I am in the south. Soon to be selling my Passat Estate Highline 130 tdi.

150k on the clock, but history intact, recent cambelt, good tyres, I'm confident enough to run it 130 miles a day to work and back, and below your budget whistle

It really has been bullet-proof - everything still works and feels like it will just keep on going.

You'd have been more than welcome to pop and poke a stick at it as a benchmark at this price range.

Agreed.

Diesel
Less than £100k
£2.5k purchase price

The above a going to be tricky to align.

If the budget is no flexible I think you need to either go petrol.
Or be confident that there are good cars out there with more then 100k on the clock (and dogs with less)

Volvo D5 of some description would be on my list, but you'll need to compromise on the mileage

I disagree, at that price the OP is looking at a 03/04 car which is before the 2005 changes which caused all the problems - the pre-05 Mazda 6 is in fact a very very reliable and capable car. I have an '03 which has just cruised through 140k miles with zero engine issues of any sort and feels solid as a rock.

I don't mind the mileage being above 100k as long as there's a service history etc. Price is fairly firm but I could go a few hundred higher if needs be.

The mazda seemed to tick all the boxes, Cheap to buy and cheap to insure but after reading reviews even on some 03/04 models it put me off. Passat is a maybe, I dont think I am in the market for an estate but it wouldnt put me off buying a good example, that S60 maybe worth ringing about, mileage seems very low though at that price so will have to watch out.

Cheers again

If you plan on running it into the ground, is it worth looking at cat-d cars?

Go for an S60, actually decent car to drive, got an ex plod T5 done 20k this year had no problems with it and its on 170k now. Stay away from the auto box though, they fail around the 120k mark.

My boss had a mazda 6 on a 09. At 100k the cam chain stretched and it mashed its valves. Big bill resulted. It was on the end of the warranty but they wriggled on milage.

That would be my choice too.

Incredible value for money now that the brand does not exist anymore
