Hi, we are shortly to be going down to one car.....just bought a new Freelander, and changes to jobs mean my wife now can walk to work. My lively 2011 MX5 went before Christmas.

We both agreed a second car would actualoy be nuce but having busted my 30k new car budget by 10k I really can't see us spending more than 2K on one.

It has to be fun, have a back seat (for the dog not humans) not be a BMW (wife hates them) be interesting and potentially look nice.

I'm not mechanically minded, so reliability would be nice.

The idea of an old XJ apoeals, though se hates Jags. I am also thinking money pit.

Porsche 924...Its mostly VW bits, so is that a practical option?

Nissan 370Z going to be too expensive I guess.

RX8...I like them, my wife used to get them as coutessy cars from our Mazda dealer..lbut they were new cars. Would a 2K one be a nightmare.

Any other contenders?

what sort of dog have you - coupes are often a bit dingy in the back - small windows and all that.

out of your list I'd got for the 924 - I would imagine the back with seats flattened would make a decent dog bed

but how about an older impreza 5 door

or merc W124 estate - your could get a whole pack of dogs in one of those, probably a safer bet than the jag

Hyundai Coupe gen3. Had mine since it was 6mnths old and it`s now over 9 years old. In that time it`s needed 2 new electric window switches an exhaust centre section and a clutch and slave cylinder. Mine`s a se 2 ltr but 2k will get you a 2.7v6.

He's not a big dog, and it would be just for occasional use. He's got a new Freelander to destroy for longer trips!

The idea of a 924 appeals. A few years ago' we har half an hour to kill (we had an mgf as our toy car then) and we were near a second hand dealers. They had a scabby...lreally tatty D Reg 944 in which the saesman admitted was in need of a bit of some electrics broken etc. My wife loved it, and she generally dislikes old cars.

What are Volvo T5s like to run. I do like the C70, or perhaps an 850. Would 2K buy me something fun?

I had a pal, who transported his dog in a triumph spitfire - he sat in the space behind the seats, when there wasn't a spare passenger seat and seemed very happy.

Jag X300s are pretty bullet proof and within budget.

But the Volvo 850 T5 estate is perfect. Reliable, comfortable, and an absolute hoot to drive.
