Engine mount completely sheared - why?
Discussion
After a few days of feeling a rocking under acceleration/deceleration, things finally came to an end today, with a bang. Things have gotten worse over the space of a few days and it was booked into a dealer on Monday. I suspected it was the mounts.
Long story short is I was moving off from a set of traffic lights today when the vibration and noise became unbearable after a very loud clunk.
The engine mount on the driver's side is compeltely sheared off and the engine itselt has dropped and moved back around 4 inches.
The car in question is a 61 plate Polo GTI.
The dealer said they've never seen anything like this before and will be contacting VW - hopefully not to find some wriggle room - and there's potentially damage due to the engine being pushed back and resting on other parts.
What's the likely cause?

Wow, thats pretty impressive! Guessing you've owned the car from new so can rule out any previous accident damage that hadn't been picked up?
It's a company car on a lease from a major lease company.I've had it from brand new. It's not been in any accidents and has been well looked after. The car's just turned 20K miles and the first service was done at 16K I think.
Don't get me wrong, it does occasionally get driven hard, but I don't believe this to be a cause!

I'd go along with it being a 10% that got through the QA stage.
Hopefully the garage won't scrimp out on the repair though.
Hope not!!Hopefully the garage won't scrimp out on the repair though.
What bothers me is they already seem to be giving me the feeling that they're going to piss me about.
On entering the dealership, I was asked how I'd done it. Then later asked by the technician what work I'd had done on the car previously.

If you are curious from an engineering perspective, fair enough. Otherwise, don't worry.thenortherner said:

Hassle the dealer, the lease company, VW direct, your company - whoever - to get into a like-for-like replacement and let them all take care of it and give it back to you with a full valet and topped up screen wash fluid.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
