temporary insurance for UK visitor

Hi Guys,
I am having difficulty finding short term car insurance for the UK and Europe.
I am planning to buy a Vauxhall VR2200 in June and have a driving holiday in the UK and Europe - France to Italy
for about 4 weeks.
I will then ship the car back to Australia.
I have a good driving history with my cars in Australia, how do I go about arranging insurance for the short time I will own this car while on holiday?

Knew a guy a while ago who just put his Aussie plates on the car whilst driving it around Europe, printed up some insurance papers, and nobody gave him a second look.

Pretty sure that's illegal though

Can you not buy a full year's insurance and then cancel when you return, claiming a refund for the unused months?
