It's in a private underground car park, yes, they went through the car and nicked my iPod touch. Now I'm getting an electric double garage door put on the space - so not only do I need an electric door for the main garage, but another electric door to keep the car safe.

I think I'm most pissed off about the tiny niks and cuts on the leather. Also I'm not even 100% sure the alarm went off?

Pissed off.

Oh and I'm based abroad, and the glass has to be shipped in from Germany. Car in storage at BMW for a week. At least it'll be safe till the garage door goes up! (Also alarmed!)

By the looks of the lead on the seat, looks like they robbed a Sat Nav or something similar...

Police said anything?

Satnav was out of the car.

I have too much going on at work for the Police to faff about for hours - nothing will happen. Years ago I had the same thing happen in Bristol, nothing happened.

Just going to cough up, and then invest in better security.

Horrible isn't it!

I had it done to me, and the brick caused damage to the dashboard which came to £3k for a new dash!

On the plus side SOCO found blood in the car and linked it to a known drug user and arrested him.

Not that it did much good but at least some justice was served.

Get it reported as soon as, and I hope the window is the only damage, and check your blower for the sound of glass tinkling about.

If you report it they'll just give you a crime number, but it does go on their stats, and if less people report things like this then they'll just take it even less seriously.

Shame about having to cough up, but I'm inclined to agree with you regarding the police.

You might get lucky with the police. Surely worth a go?

I looked over the car as best as I could - because I also thought about extra damage, and I think (fortunately), apart from the glass on the seat, I don't think any damage. I found some paper on the floor, so I think they put paper up, and used elbow, or a hammer. I think once the glass is removed, you'll see the extent of the damage to the seat (if any... I hope...) Otherwise might consider going black interior, with BMW performance seats biggrin

REPORT IT !

Same happened to me a couple of years ago, they sent a SOCO out, she spotted a tiny spot of blood where the scrote had cut themselves, took a sample, a month or two later I got a visit to tell me that they had got the bloke who did it. I later learned that he got sent down for it (and a few others he had done). I was pleased with the result and would recommend anyone to report similar stuff.

Good luck, OP.
Fair enough guys, but I'm not in the UK - I'm in Croatia at the moment, and the Police are as useful as a chocolate teapot. My landlord is an ambassador to the US, and said, forget it, waste of time. What does that tell you?

Also, my office landlord has his Porsche's stored in a proper manned secure garage, not even in his own garages! Guess that's the risk I took driving the car here, seriously considering driving it back and either storing it in the UK or selling it, and getting some eco-barge, or a Mini Cooper S, but the same thing will happen with any car. Just have to increase the security.

Definitely report it. Recently had a couple of panels scratched on the X5 and the police were excellent. Firstly sent a CSI out who took pictures. Then 2 officers came to see us and knocked on every door in the close to see if anyone had seen anything.

They were very thourough and raised the profile very well. I reckon it was someone in the close so they now know that it's been taken seriously even though they weren't caught.

Mind you, 3 CCTV cameras up and running now so if the coonts try it again they will be caught.

we had a similar thing happen early this year.
Yes, there was a bit of faffing around with the Police but a few hours later we got a call to tell us that, by luck, they'd raided a house of a guy suspected of another crime and because we'd reported the crime they were able to trace our property from our description.
Ultimately, he and an accomplice got sent down for various crimes (including this one). They were able to link him to our car by fibres of material found at his home and on our seat, attached to the glass.
Ultimately though, Croatia is A problem in this case,

Report it but be realistic, they probably won't do anything or catch any one. You car is in a dry environment so you have a good chance of getting them there to take prints etc.

That's been broken with either a nail punch, spark plug ceramic or as used to be the most common, a screwdriver jambed between the glass and the frame then levered until the glass pops. This method usually damages the door frame but creates much less mess as the glass just drops in rather than bursting caused by a brick. Good news is if they have levered it and it's been done at the back of the glass where they usually do it then the black trim is easily replaceable and quite cheap. You usually find the rubber gets damaged on BMW's with this sort of break in though.

Leather seats are very robust, I can't remember seeing a leather seat damaged by broken glass. Don't sit on it and grind it intro the seat though.

Security wise putting more doors between your car and the 2@'s will just make them more curious as to why you want to stop them looking in. I had a customer that kept his Metro in his garage, thieves got in one night and ransacked it knowing once in they were never going to be seen.

Best way of preventing theft is park somewhere in full view. Remove valuables from your car, this includes satnav, mountings, cables and the mark's they leave on your glass. Any Ipod leads etc and leave your glove box open and empty, this way the thieves can see you have nothing hidden worth breaking in to rummage about for.

Might not be 100% fool proof but having spent 23 years replacing glass following break ins I can say I know how and why they tent do target vehicles.

Hope you get it sorted without much fuss. I really hated doing break ins, customers were always so upset, understandably so.

If I'm reading this right, the car is in Croatia therefore reporting it to plod over there really is an utter waste of time, they couldn't give a flying one. A friend of my father-in-law (my wife is Croatian) smashed his car into a bus stop in town after a monster session. Local plod turn up, arrest him, take him downtown. He was released sometime later as he had 'connections' and deep pockets. Utterly incompetent and fully bribable.

Thanks - Agreed, but a lot of other people in the garage (3 levels, many spaces) have got the garage doors put on, so I won't be any different to anyone else then. Obviously the scum that broke in will know, but I will also get the garage door alarmed. What more can I do?

I can see a few little scratches to the interior where the glass hit - no damage to the window at all, or rubber/seem - I think they must have just waked it with a hammer.

W@nkers. This kind of thing boils my blood.
Hoover the glass up bit by bit to avoid damage to leather.
