I did a quote on their website, and I put an E46 320D on there, along with a Bug Eye Impreza WRX Wagon. I currently drive a 2006 Hawkeye STi Spec D, but doing a lot of miles in a new job means I really need a diesel. Were I to have just one car, I would get a 330D and this is very much Plan A at the moment, but it feels rather rotten that my partner is walking two miles to work and the same home unless she gets a lift.

I take her and pick her up as often as I can, as it's actually on my way, but sometimes I work shifts that don't allow this. Add to this that she suffers from chronic joint and muscle pain anyway, and it all feels rather wrong that she should have to walk while I have a car, despite the fact my job requires it. I'm sure you know what I mean, however.

She's much more resolute than I am about us needing to run just one car for the time being, as we don't have a great deal of money due to various different levels of st other people have left the two of us in. It also goes without saying that if we did have two cars, one of them should be at least a little bit fun, especially given that she does very little mileage. A Bug Eye WRX won't hold a candle to the STi, but it would still be better than a bland box.

Anyhow, I digress. I went onto Admiral and ran through a multicar quote, put us both on it and set each of us as main driver of the respective cars. The quote came out at over £1300 and was basically £600 for the BMW and £700 for the Impreza. Prices which I could get either insured for on its own somewhere else. There's no saving or visible benefit to going with this policy whatsoever in my eyes.

So what gives?! What's the point?

Do you currently have 2 sets of NCD to use on 2 separate insurance policies?

Various administration benefits.
That aside it won't be competative for everyone, some people may save hundreds of pounds some people may find it very expensive.

This^^^^

I recently went from one car to two, and could not get anywhere close to the Admiral price elsewhere insured separately. One company wanted more for my Micra without Ncb than Admiral quoted for both cars!

It can work, play around on their quote site with which car has the ncb, what mileage each does, who is the main / occasional user, etc.

I used them for two years, as they were actually cheaper once the 3rd car discount was applied. For two cars, I've found it cheaper to insure separately - using two NCDs for my wife and I.

Only problem is that insurance renewal for both cars now comes up at the same time!

I've been with them for a few years, nobody can get close on price. Puma, Boxster and Mito all come to around £1000 fully comp. The only real pain is that you need NCB for each car, so whilst the Boxster and Mito were still well priced when combined, the Puma wasn't cheap until a couple of years NCB built up on it. That said, the Multicar quote was still cheaper than getting the Puma insured separately.

Yes. I have 7 years, she has something like 4. Both over 30. Changing who uses which car hasn't altered the quote either. Seems very shoddy on first impressions.

Her license is clean, mine has 3 points, although I have to declare another 3 that have now come off because they ask for 5 years' history.

I have three cars on a Admiral multi car policy but at the time of adding the third car Admiral would only allow a NCB discount on two of the cars, ie my discount and my partners.
To be honest, regarding the NCB discount they seemed very confused and gave conflicting advice but the upshot was that I could only apply a discount to one vehicle. I had two NCB not the three I really needed for my three cars.

I have 3 cars on an Aviva multicar. Checked recently cant get close to the aviva multicar price if I insure them individually as I get a discount on cars 2 and 3. And they mirrored my full NCD onto the third car as well.

Only downside is that instead of the 3 insurances being spread over the year they now all come together.

I had two cars with Admiral, an MX5 and the wife's Volvo on two separate policies. When they came up for renewal they sent out separate quotes and I rang them to see how much I would save on Multicar. I cant remember the exact amounts as it was a few years ago, but it came in a couple of hundred pounds more expensive. When I asked the woman at the call centre why it was more expensive she had no idea. In the end I binned Admiral and found separate policies elsewhere for cheaper.

Trust me on this, having had first hand experience of claiming through Admiral for a Non Fault Accident (stationary whilst a van drove into me), I will never be using them again.

I had a multicar policy, when it came to renewal it had jumped up over £1k! (before accident), after questioning this they could'nt understand which cars I had actually insured and then after requesting to quote me on my car only, couldnt understand basic English. It appears that they have employed a team of gibbon monkeys to man the phones, woe betide anyone who actually decides to use the service they have paid for!

Eventually I found one guy there who hadnt had a full labotomy and was still able to function.

Aviva do a multi car scheme and it saved my car and my parents 2 cars about 500 quid. I am 21 and drive a 60 plate fiesta zetec s and it cost me just over 800 quid doing 30,000 a year. Also a named driver on my dads mx5 which cost 110 quid to add me on. Really good prices for my age!

As with all insurance questions - it's about getting the right quote. If it's more expensive to get multicar, don't get it.

Similar experience having two cars insured with admiral I asked about multicar, spent an hour on the phone while the guy worked it out, he asked me if I was happy with a quote £300 more than the combined total of the single policies I had with them. When I pointed out it was more expensive he put me on hold whilst he got his supervisor, ten minutes later they said that something was wrong and they would call back. 12 months later they still haven’t called lol.

no problems with admiral. had multicar for 4 years now and as such it seems my at the time 3 years ncb that was used for two cars was split, run at the same time and now each car has 7 individual years attached to it which is nice.

Admiral have always been a fair bit cheaper for me and I've generally been happy in dealing with them. It is annoying that the annual renewal quote is always a good bit more expensive than they will offer you if you go through a comparison site, but I guess that's the same across the board.

In terms of multi-car it saved me £350 in one year a few years back, which was actually the cost of insuring the cheaper of the two cars I was sorting insurance for.

A couple of years ago I took out an Admiral multicar policy when my eldest started driving. Added a fourth car to the fleet (Ka) which I'd been getting quotes of around £1300 to insure separately. Admiral did the lot for £1300 including a 17 year old learner.

12 months later the renewal came through with, by this time, a newly qualified driver. Still £1300 so I paid up.

The following year the renewal came through at £1250. Pretty good I hear you say particularly as yet another 17 year old learner had been added. Trouble is I went out and got individual quotes that came in at £850 total (£1180 from Admiral themselves!). Called Admiral to ask why the multicar policy wasn't delivering any benefit even compared to their own individual polices and received no rational response. They couldn't care less. So I'm now back to four independent policies that will all renew at the same time cry

We received our renewal from Admiral today so after reading this thought I'd put a quote through Aviva. Saved myself £300 so I'm pretty chuffed!

One question though, do you still need to prove the NCD on each vehicle or can they do it electronically these days?

Maybe it's the third/fourth cars that work out cheaper?

I added the Lambo to my policy for about £400 extra, didn't think at was bad.
