Looking through my copy of AutoCar my father saw an advert about remapping diesels, performance gain and possible MPG increase.

Now he has a relatively slow 2004 1.7 DTI Astra that is used as his work vehicle on a daily basis, off he went onto his computer and found some information from companies that would take the car from 75bhp to around 105bhp and torque from 167NM to 217NM or so.

He knows it's never going to be fast, but asked me if it would be worth the £200-250 or so.

So the same question over to more knowledgeable pistonheads, and if so where would be the best place in the South East.

Depends if the clutch can take it, how old the engine is, how well it's been looked after, how old the turbo is...

A lot of variables. Personally I'd say don't bother, unless it's really essential.

Picked it up less than a year ago with 30k miles in mint condition, was owned by a older gentleman that we vaguely knew through family members.

Not really essential, then again I don't think remapping a diesel ever is? I think he meant more in terms of enjoyment/general motoring.

If it's a 1.7 DTI 16v then I'm almost certain it's an Isuzu engine which means they're pretty robust. We have an '02 plate one with 145k on the clock which is still going strong. The extra power would make it better and if it gives an extra 30bhp then it's a fair figure, to be fair though, for only having 75bhp, they're not painfully slow, our van hops along quite comfortably on the motorway.

In that case, no reason why not- it's the higher mileage cars to watch. Seen many a VW/Skoda with a few miles on suddenly explode a turbo due to a combination of an overstretched map/aged parts.

Entirely up to you! It's a pretty strong lump. We have the common rail version in a work van, gets driven to within an inch of its life and it never breaks. Ever.

JKM in Portsmouth would probably be able to do it for you...

Thanks a lot guys. I believe that's the engine, dad specifically was looking for one with that engine after he spoke with a friend who is an engineer at a local Vauxhall garage.

Thanks for the recommendation, will go back to him with that. Any ideas on the MPG increase or is that part usually nonsense with remaps? Not very clued up as you can probably tell!

Edit : We're in North Essex if that helps in recommending nearer places.

Honestly, I think its a waste of cash., gets you to 40-50 in a bit at which point any further acceleration is just of academic interest.
Akin to buying a hooker a dress before you go home with her....pointless..

Forget the MPG increases. 99% tosh.

Also that's an engine that did an average of 4,000 miles pa in it's first 7 years of life..... I wouldn't be remapping that one
