My Volvo T5 has just clocked 175,000 miles. I look after it, regular servicing with genuine parts, fully synthetic oil etc.

I was wondering whether getting the injectors cleaned would be worthwhile? Has anyone else found it beneficial? I presume the engine will feel smoother and more responsive?

A chap on the volvo forums (Jimathan) used to do by all accounts an excellent job cleaning injectors...

Not sure if he does it still but might be worth looking into...

Overall I think the answer is "Yes, you should clean the injectors at reasonable intervals."

I'd be very surprised if you get deposits on injectors unless you use crap fuel. The BN standard ensures that there is enough detergent in the fuel to stop any deposits forming and the various filters should prevent anything getting into them via the fuel line.

The proper way is to force solvent under pressure through the fuel rail or to remove the injector entirely and back-flush or ultrasound clean it.

In a tub. Along with the injectors, one presumes.

I ran my own garage/MOT centre a few years back and a salesman came in wanting to demonstrate his injector cleaning product. I forget the brand, but it involved dangling a bottle of fluid from the underside of the bonnet and running the engine off of this rather than the fuel tank. I let him do his thing on my own car, as I didn't feel right letting him loose with a customer's car and also so if there was any improvement then I would certainly be able to feel it. There was no difference whatsoever, and when I told the salesman this he seemed surprised and a bit upset. I felt a bit sorry for him as he genuinely seemed like he believed in his product, but I wasn't going to buy into something that I couldn't sell to my customers without feeling like a snake oil salesman!

However, this could have been a st product and there may be benefits to be had by getting a proper job done by someone with the right equipment. The ASNU system (this is going back a few years now, not sure if it is still a thing or not) looked like the right sort of thing, it had a test bench to check flow and spray patterns etc. before and after being ultrasonically cleaned.

Yep. Won't quite have the same effect crystallising in the fuel lines. Wasn't there a American biker that put energy drink in the tank thinking it was injector cleaner, it didn't go well.

thought that was a Internet rumor about some adding NOZ [energy drink] to his car thinking is was N02 [laughing gas] but its all to be blamed on Fast and Furious cos everthing was running on NOZ but seeing as thye were getting up to 100 mpg in their suped up street racers maybe they were running them on NOZ energy drinnks........
