According to several threads on here there's no legal state of cat write-offs, it's just an insurance ratings system. If you fix, get it road legal, it's yours.

Interesting, I always assumed that most of the panels on them were plastic. Thats the useless bit of information I have learnt today.

I'm pretty sure that Cat B's cannot be put back on the road. If it was there is the added hoop that some (if not most) insurance companies get VERY nervous with insuring anything that been severely damaged.

£17k for what is a pile of parts usable for only another GTR or some mad modded car is optimistic as is the blatant lie that it starts and drives!

A) I bet there are all manner of electronics stopping it starting and b) that WILL not drive! Look at the front N/S wheel FFS!

Edit. Beaten too it. I stand corrected re legal stand point.

Pretty sure that's not true. As far as I know, a cat-A write-off has to be crushed, you can't even use parts from it. Cat-Bs are not allowed back on the road, but I suppose in practice you could repair it then SVA it as a new car on a Q-plate.

I sure wouldn't mind taking one of the front seats and turning them into a desk chair.

Would it ever make economic sense to buy it and "buff it out"?

Even if you could get it all straight for £10k and through the relevant tests with VOSA, which I doubt, you've got a Cat B which has got to be worth less than the £27k you've spent.

Only thing worth having out of it would be the engine surely?
But then realistically should be 7.5k at most? I dont wknow what the prices of these engines are though...

From the number of threads on here, that what's the insurance companies make you think and bully you into accepting the car can now no loner be used on the road.

It's not hard; there's a few people I know instantly think any sort of write-off on a car and it has to go.

Thats the short of it but yes, once an insurance company has sold the salvage on, thats the end of their interest in it. DVLA dont really care what damage a car has suffered, all they're interested in is a brief check to make sure its not a ringer and they'll give you the registration document.
