Cherished Plates not issued
Discussion
Hi guys, I have a quick query about vanity plates and I wonder if anyone could help.
I have been looking around the DVLA site for a specific 05 registration plate, but it is listed as not available. The plate is xx05 xxK and both xxJ and xxL are listed as available, but not K, the 2 available are in their bargain basement bracket of £250.
I might have had a sneaky look at some online database aimed at owners of vehicles to be able to look up their insurance status and the plate does NOT show up on said database as insured.
So, question is, if it was never issued, how does one go about asking the DVLA if they will issue it and how much it is?

You write or phone and ask the DVLA if they will issue it and how much it is. Their possible answers are, in order of likelihood,1. It's already on the list or we'll put it on the list of numbers going to auction. - Very likely
2. We're not going to issue that one. - Fairly likely
3. Yours for £250! - Very unlikely.

, fair enough, so basically, show an interest and the price rockets up? Nice. If it's considered any more special than the preceding and following plates, why is it that it's not already been auctioned in the 7 years since the 05 plates came out? There are 2 variations of the plate I'm interested in (different first letter), both are identical to the situation above, so it seems odd they arn't available for sale, nor in use....LaurasOtherHalf said:
Just email them, we did & they got back fairly quickly & said they'd offer it for auction.
They then auctioned it about 6 months later & e,ailed me to let me know it would be going under the hammer.
Good service I thought
Ok, fair enough, I will see if I can find the email address. Wonder what the average price of an innocuous 05 plate is at auctionThey then auctioned it about 6 months later & e,ailed me to let me know it would be going under the hammer.

The problem if it goes to auction is that others can bid and push the price up.
Years ago I wrote asking for JAG114R. DVLA replied not available, then a couple of years later they wrote and say it is in the next auction. The bidding started way above what I could pay and sold for IIRC £6.5k. It's been advertised ever since at a reg number dealer for £20k.
