Focus st170 advice please on tires
Discussion
Hi all
Been offered a st170 for a bargain price from a chap a few doors down. it's a 02plate 65'000 mls fsh and totally mint for £1200.The only thing it will need is new tires on the front but has ditch finders on the rear so might as well replace all 4 at the same time.Budget will be around £250 for the 4 so what recommendations would you guys give in regards to tires.
thank you john

I used to have an ST170-they are tyre hungry, especially on the front-they seem to eat the inside edges despite the geometry being spot on. Don't go for budgets-they're a false economy.
In my experience with my car the best were Conti Sport Contact 2's but I'm not sure you'll get anything decent for your budget being honest
from memory the Conti's were around £90 a corner.

te that altered the handling so badly turn in was sharper in a 1.6 estate with P6000s.
I fitted a new set of 4 Contisport Contacts (this was 2005) and the car was brilliant, cheap tyres ruin some cars and the focus is certainly very tyre sensitive.

Ditto with mine-the dealer put some Klebers on it and they promptly marbled up and fell apart as soon as I showed them the first corner at a trackday. The Conti's survived two trackdays!

Four decent tyres and a four wheel alignment = a happy Focus.

Cheers for the info so far guys the tires fitted are Low-profile 215/45/R17.Ans according to swmbo now says budget can be £300 no more
TBH I think you'll still struggle to get something decent for that
may be worth having a look at Matadors-they're still budgety but are made by Conti-I've got them on the Streetwise running circa 180bhp-power wise it doesn't set the road on fire but the tyres cope admirably and deliver decent feel, grip and control in the wet or dry.welshjohn said:

In that case, falken fk452.

I`d expect a tyre place to charge £10 a tyre for fitting though.
Buy decent tyres for the back (Continentals ideally), fit the s
te on the front for a few thousand miles (you'll just have woeful understeer but they won't last long) then rotate rears to the front and buy another pair the month after.
Or simply tell her the car was so cheap it needs another £100 worth of boots. You won't be wasting money fitting good rubber on that car.

So £75 per corner should get something ok then.
MyTyres have an offer on Falken FK453's that takes you only a few quid over budget (and are a tiny bit cheaper than the older FK452 from Camskill). The ZE914's come in under budget, but I wasn't massively impressed by their predecessors (ZE912), though they weren't in ditchfinder territory.
So £75 per corner should get something ok then.Apart from that there isn't a huge amount of choice of good tyres at this end of the budget tyre market.
EDIT: Found some pretty good deals on eBay for:
Hankook Ventus V12 EVO at £74.40 inc p+p each. They have done reasonably well in tyre tests.
You could also have 4 Toyo Proxes T1R delivered for £301. That's probably what I would go for as I have had nothing but good experiences with these tyres in terms of wet and dry grip, though they are a bit soft for some cars.
