Good Afternoon PH

I currently have a MK4 golf GT TDI, but have been looking at the small petrol Engine 1 series. I have had enough Problems with my diesel (DMF, Turbo etc), hence looking for a small Petrol.

I rarely go on the Motorway, But when I do, I like to sit at circa 90 mph. The diesel is fairly relaxed at these speeds.

What sort of RPM is the little 1.6 petrol doing? I know it has a 6 speed box so I was hoping I would get away without it revving its little nuts off (irrespective of MPG at them speeds).

They claim 48 mpg, so even if I hit 42 on my daily I would be more than happy and would be on par with the diesel golf.

Sit a 90mph? Bloody hell I'm dull! I'm more than happy to sit at 60mph on my commute and even do it when heading to see my family 250 miles away!

Back on topic... I would imagine 90mph would be over 4k rpm in a 116i so would be getting a little loud.

Our '56' plate 116i does 25 mph per thousand in 6th; 90 mph is quite busy in ours but they may have upped the gearing since.

Assuming the gearing is similar or lower than the 120i (one of the two is a fairly safe bet wink ) then it's not all that relaxed, although it could be worse.

My 116i does 3k rpm at 82ishMph as a guide, i wouldn't say its loud though, but it does lack economy when averaging speeds above that.

Edit: Its a 58 plate so facelift model if that makes a difference.

Also, i managed 43mpg over 1500 miles driving around europe at an average of 62mph (indicated on trip computer) Obviously taking into account city driving as well. But on the motorways i was doing around 80-85mph.

Hope that helps.

It will make a big difference whether it is the new or old shape 1 series. The new 1 is a lot more powerful and torquey and is much better than the normally aspirated two litre engine. My guess is ninety you will be at about 3k but has been a while since i drove one. I can let you know tomorrow if you need for definite. I have a new shape 116i on my demo fleet so if you want to have a go i dont think im a million miles away come and have a borrow of it.
Sorry economy wise mid forties is achievable at motorway speeds. However i reckon at ninety it would be more like late thirties.

To add - I should clarify that I am talking about the previous shape. I haven't driven a current shape one. I meant to add that but forgot.

I got 35mpg(could get less if thrashed) in bmw 116 I had for 6 months, mostly dc's, never hit 40mpg. the 1er is quite heavy for a small car.

eta

I had a 118d auto got 40mpg all day and a lot less unstressed engine. I wouldn't rule them out.

We had a new 116i as a courtesy car a couple of months ago - from my recollection it is geared quite long (presumably for motorway work) but was not terribly economical, even when not pressing on. It also wasn't as "sprightly" as we anticipated.
