What address should my car be registered to?
Discussion
Evening all, in the next few weeks I'll be relocating to Surrey with my work. I currently own a property in Aberdeen where all of my worldly possessions, including my car, are registered to; I'll be keeping this flat (renting it out) and moving into a rental property in Surrey. Obviously I need to tell my insurers of my change in address but would like to know if I need to change the address on the V5? I'm assuming not as my Surrey address will be temporary (12-18 months before moving again) and I'll be keeping my Aberdeen property but I've started to doubt myself.
TIA

iirc it just has to be an address which you can be contacted at.
for example gypsies can register their cars at any place where any corespondance regarding the car from the dvla/police etc will get to the registered keeper, i think there are a few adresses that have literally hundreds of cars registered to them

Change to your relocation address, if you move back or elsewhere then change it again. As long as you don't tick the new keeper box on the V5 you wont have any additional owners added.
Yeah best to do it that way, especially as your driving around surrey one evening if you pass any cop cars with ANPR in and they are bored something from Aberdeen might just tickle their fancy as your a long long way from home.After_Shock said:

Surely anpr doesn't show up the address as soon as it scans a plate?eltax91 said:

Good point I believe your right. If a car decided to put a call in for details on the OP's car then the address its registered to would be given, unlikely to happen im sure you would agree but would probably be enough for them to give you a tug in the right circumstances.I believe, for insurance purposes that your V5 address should be the same as the insurance correspondence address.
If it got nicked and they found their quote was based on a low risk area and you were residing in a higher risk area, or the logbook implied you lived in a higher risk area then they would have cause for refusal.

Totally false, I'm afraid. I've been in the same position before; my car was registered at my parents' address and insured at my flat. Completely legal and above board as I could be contacted at both addresses (lived between the two). In addition lots of people store cars in lockups etc away from their houses. The car will be registered to the house and insured under the garage postcode. No way round this as a lockup can't be used as a postal address. I've done this too and insurance company were fine with it once explained.

I believe you have to state in the insurance 'which address' the vehicle will be kept at but providing thats declared and is correct then the insurance will be o.k to be set up at any address. In addition lots of people store cars in lockups etc away from their houses. Got pulled one night when I was 17 and my car was registered to my mams address but my license to my dads address, ended up being detained in the back of a police van for 30mins having a rather heated discussion over the legalities of having the car registered to a different address to my license. Said at the time so if I had 3 houses and a car at each can I have 3 licenses for the 3 addresses and if not how do I get around it, guy couldnt answer the question but he was still right!
