We're off to NZ in September and planning on hiring either a motorhome or a car for a week. They all want extra NZ$ for premium insurance, usually around $35+ per day.

Is there an alternative, e.g. taking out cover here in the UK to cover it?

get an Amex platinum card which covers it all, you'll also get travel insurance for everyone, hotel upgrades and airline lounge access etc, so for a big trip it pays for itself right away.
