Tiny E39 BMW boot spoiler

I think it's OEM, and I suspect it does very little or it would be fitted to all of them. I guess it probably reduces rear lift at high speed a tiny bit.
You would be surprised the difference they can make to high end stability and improve aero over the car in general.
A rear spoiler does not have to be huge to be effective.

Quite. Also it just wouldn't do to have a GT3 whale tail on an M5 now would it?
Indeed, though someone might need to chat to the lads on M3cutters as I am sure it will be the next big thing innit bruv for the 92's?OP think of a golf ball and ask why does it fly better with dimples vs smooth.

I'd aware of how spoilers work, but I'd have hoped that BMW knew enough about aerodynamics to sheer the air-flow fairly clearly on the standard bodywork. We're not talking about an ancient car here. A rear spoiler does not have to be huge to be effective.
Mind you, the standard design does look quite poor, to my untrained eye.

I'll agree with that - it wasn't a cheap car when new, so to have the extra expense of making a bootlid with something like that molded in shouldn't be particularly unreasonable, and it'd look a lot better for it.hornetrider said:

The M5 travels an awful lot faster than the 520i.HTH

I confess to liking the subtlety of it. The contemporary B10 spoiler looks horrific in comparison.
I really like the subtleness of the 39 m5, if I take the rear badge off only the 4 tips give it away so it blends in to the background nicely for some q car status (now that it is getting on a bit)kambites said:
Does that mean that BMW should give the standard 5-series rubbish aerodynamics? Why not just design the car properly in the first place?
Are you advocating the removal of all aerodynamic adornments for all cars? You're backing yourself into a ridiculous position chap. It is clearly appropriate for some models to require extra aero due to their increased performance.
Please see, oh, every single manufacturer since the dawn of time.

Show me any 4 door 5 seat car that has best effect for aero whilst retaining inside comfort levels for space and having a hugely practical boot.I can testify that the car is very aerodynamically stable at speed and in high cross winds so it does its job nicely. The boot lip is partly for show and partly for the one occasion you might hit the autobhan but I see your point about having something moulded in, but that would increase costs over the entire range to benefit only one model. Also if you are buying an M you want a little bit of plastic to show you are in a sports car

The e39 IS an ancient car - its been around since 1996, and was probably in design for 3 years before that, so thats 20 years ago.
Secondly, why has a tiny little boot spoiler on such an old car after all this time become such a point of contention? weird...
