Well I bought a cheap car last night, value around 500 quid. It clearly is a MOT fail, at least on the discs and pads. I'm not overly angry with my purchase but at the back of my mind I feel like I should take the car back to the MOT garage and make them fix it. It was mot a month ago, discs are corroded and pads rusty.

What would you do?

When you say 'discs are corroded and pads are rusty', do you just mean they look rusty? If so, it may not have occurred to you that we have had a st load of rain and cold weather the past few months and it may have been sat around at times?

If there is life in the pads and the discs aren't warped or cracked, what do you expect the garage to do for you?

The discs on my mondeo show rust an hour after washing it. After a couple of weeks off the road or MX5's discs ook like scrap!

Post some pictures.

The discs have a 10mm clear line where bit of the pad actually touches the disk, everything else is just rust. That's how best I describe it

I can possibly take some pictures later

Edit : it is a mx5 smile

Take it for a thrash and give the brakes a work out, that should sort the rust out. Only if they are excessively worn, grooved or pitted is it worth changing them really.

Should you not check this stuff when you buy the car?

Regardless of whether MOT person picked it up or not.. It would have been legal on the day of the MOT, you don't know what the car has done since the MOT date?

Basics of buying a car, check stuff..

We've had the 'gay car' sitting for a while and the discs get quite corroded.
We took it for a run today (with the roof down!) and they are now much better.

Try taking her for a run and see if it's any better.

On another note, my brother bought a car in a hurry from a sales garage with attached MOT centre and the car is a complete pile of poo. It's died and before the end of the year ticket due to rot. - And it's not a Lancia. An 02 plate Mazda6.

Someone commented on a picture the other day saying the rusty discs on an ebay ad looked like the car had been dumped in a field, my discs looked like that 2 days after driving to Scotland at Christmas, if the pads weren't on the metal, the calipers leaking & they established a good enough reading then it's a pass. You might be surprised at how low the pass figure is, I know cars which have passed that I would not want to exceed 30mph in.

When I apply the brakes at let's say 40mph I can feel the pedal vibrating, like the disks are warped.

Your right, but it has an lsd (I hope) and it came with a full tank of petrol.

Sounds like you've got a bargain then, £50 should get you a pair of replacement discs and you're good to go.

AFAIK the condition of the discs and pads is only advisory, providing they past the efficiency test, then they pass.

For £500 I wouldn't be complaining if that's all it needs. Man up and get some new disks/pads on it.
