Firstly apologies if this is the wrong section.

My friends managed to do this to one of the tyres on her car:-

It's quite a decent chunk she's taken out of the sidewall - is it liable to be dangerous (so should she get it replaced?) And would it be an MOT issue?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

I doubt it is going to go bang straight away

HOWEVER!

Id get it changed pretty sharpish, its a weak point in the in the tyre and will fail an MOT.
A tyre's cheaper than a crash eh?

Shouldn't be. I did pretty much the exact same thing on mine a few years ago. Took it to a tyre place and they said it was fine. I even started a thread on here asking the same question and everyone said it was fine. Happy days!

Thanks for the replys gents but I'm a bit confused now! So one vote for it being dangerous and an mot fail one against - any further thoughts?

Looking at the picture you have, it looks like there are no cords showing = absolutely fine, don't worry about it

Ask a tyre fitter.

As said above no cords are showing, I'd drive it. But she is obviously worried so go to tyre a place to get it checked. Make sure it's an indie though and not Kwik fit et al, or she'll need all 4 changing, plus brakes and exhaust!

If you still have the chunk that came out superglue it in for a cosmetic fix, if no cords showing the tyres fine.

I think the sequence would go:
scratchchin
suck teeth
new tyre

Replace it. It would be an advisory on the MOT, at the very least.

Is that a Seat Ibiza? Looks like mine and the tyres are getting close to around £150 each for something reasonable. Aside from that the damage looks minimal Id keep it, Ive seen far worse on the roads.

Looks like its a chunk out of the rim protector. If that's all it is, leave it.

Nothing like being overly dramatic is there?

I would drive it. But if you are worried change it.

Nope - on both counts.

You don't strictly have a rim protector in that tyre. As there's no visible cords, you're fine to continue using it.

Keep a close eye on it over the next few weeks. If you see any bulges appearing around the area (or anywhere else for that matter) get it changed pronto.

If its a front tyre, stick it on the back, assuming same size...

biggrin No, but you get where I'm coming from. If there's any doubt at all, don't mess.

Thanks for all the info - I'll pass it on to her and then it's her decision I guess. Think I'd stick a couple of new tyres on myself.
