Hi all,

Hope you can help... I've been driving for 16 years and never made an insurance claim in that time and built up a good amount of no claims discount but in 2008 I went travelling... I kept my car in the UK and continued with the insurance well into 2009 but when I realised I was going to carry on travelling for a couple of years I decided to sell the car and obviously cancel the insurance.

When I returned from my travels I moved straight into London and didnt need to get a car.. fast forward to now and I've not had a personal insurance policy for nearly 5 years and so all my no-claims discounts are void. I've been driving hire cars and a company car just a few times in the last couple of years but that doesn't count.. all the insurance companies are basically telling me I have to start from scratch and I'm getting massive insurance quotes.. my last car I was paying £550 a year on a MK1 Lexus GS 300 Sport (group 18)... I recently got a 2001 Saab 9-3 Aero Hot and Im getting quotes around the £1000 mark (paying monthly) with 0 no claims discount..

Can anyone recommend a company that may be a bit more sympathetic to someone in my situation... lots of clean driving experience but because of some fking rule Im gonna get shafted!

I've done the price comparison sites and spoken to my previous insurer who I had been with for all the previous years.. none of them are quoting me happy...

Cheers in advance..

I`m not sure there`s much you can do apart from shop around.
My mum had this problem when she divorced as she`d always been a named driver and had zero no claims despite no accidents etc. for years.
It was pretty steep the first year but dropped quite sharply after that.
Sorry I can`t offer any other advice.

Same story here, 31yo, four years experience, and 0 No Claims. I've never made a claim and never had an accident.
Howver, through owning crap cars that haven't lasted a year and insurance company not being able to transfer insurance I'm paying 500 a year for a 900cc Fiat Cinquecento!!

Bite the bullet, Im sure at least 1 years no claims is going to have quite an affect.

If you buy something vaguely classic, Classic Line Insurance will insure you - a classic policy has no NCB and doesn't earn any. They insure modern Mustangs and Corvettes.

Probably a good shout. They usually will insure anything vaguely fun that's over 15 years old, and then anything American up to the present day.

I'm insuring a 2001 BMW 740i as a classic, I don't use it for commuting etc. Try that route.

Footman James a good shout. http://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk/ may also be worth a go.

Car insurance is always about grinding out every option until you find something you're happy with

Sorry to hear OP but I had the same after riding motorbikes from 1979 until 2003.

I had a bad off and decided to give them up but after a few years I returned and the cost was a nightmare.

You appear to be treated the same as some one new to driving and no account was taken of my 24 years of experience which included touring, racing (on track) and dispatch riding.

All counted for nothing but the premiums did take a bit of a dive after the 1st year.

Good luck.

Love the way this all works.

Can't use the 9+ years NCB on my car for my bike yet I lose the car's NCB if I crash the bike.

Ring them up, a few years ago I got two years NCB added for driving on other people's policies without too much trouble.

have you spoken to a broker rather than just filled out the online forms?

Speak to the last car insurance company you were with?

I was overseas for a couple of years, but came back just before 2 years had elapsed, and managed to hold on to ncb by 10 days! Two years is the magic cut off point for many companies.

Unfortunately I have since spent 3 years driving on a classic policy (which oddly allowed me commuting) and so when recently trying to insure my winter snotter, I had to bendover to the tune of twice the value of the car as I no longer have any ncb.

If its any consolation, car insurance is much cheaper in the UK than Canada

Done that as mentioned previously but were no help...

Thinking I might just go as a named driver on my old mans policy... I know it wont earn me any NCB just now but is a simple and cheap solution for now....

That's not correct. You can't loose NCB on a policy if you don't make a claim on it. You do have to declare the accident which will hike your premium anyway though. They probably meant you'd loose the bike policy no claims you were earning that year.
